Jack Biggins Goes Mile in 1:12% — Lawley Gallop* 31 He. and a Quarter in 2:W~. — Dowaglae Shows Improvement. r LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 12.— Hope for vie- !, tory by a Kentucky-owned equine in the Kentucky Derby renewal next Saturday had a vigorous stimulation this morning when Leo Marks Misstep galloped the Derby route, of one mile and a quarter, in 2 :07%. The Lexington-owned colt was only indulged with gallop at one mile and an eighth and, after completing that distance in the fine time of . 1:53%, was easing up steadily as he negotiated the remainder of the Derby route. In his trial Misstep ran so impressively as to win numerous additional admirers among the horsemen and high praise for him . was heard, on every side. It was generally . agreed that his work slightly overshadowed . Heigh Counts move Friday, dissipating much . of the belief that Misstep is unsuited by such a distance as the Derby route. Willie Garner, who will ride the colt in the Derby, had the leg on him this morning and, under instructions to "slow him to a breeze" . throughout, he had no small task to accom- . plish. Misstep could not have appeared more anxious to run and, with Mop LTp, another of Mr. Marks Derby eligibles, began strongly . for the trial. The two went the first quarter in :24 ; the half in :48% and finished three-quarters in t 1 :14%, with Mop Up having pressure applied. At the end of the mile Misstep was still , going with easy strides and was timed in i 1 :40%. He had taken a lead of a length over i Mop Up at this juncture. At the termination , of the mile and an eighth Missteps margin over Mop Up, which was under hard driving, was about three lengths and the Upset colt was racing with an ease that was as surprising, as it was impressive. After dismounting Garner, said that "He" Misstep is the smoothest running and probably the fastest horse I ever rode. Why, he almost pulled me out of the saddle breezing so strongly against very light hold." Misstep and Mop Up came out of the work in fine condition. While Missteps work stood out as the most outstanding of the morning, if not the entire season, other less noted candidates for the race were given useful gallops. Jack Higgins, Colonel Shaw and Lawley, among the three-year-olds named to oppose Heigh Count in a race at one mile and a sixteenth Monday, were seen in training dur- ing the morning. Jack Higgins, winner of the Louisiana Derby and which will carry equal weight of 118 pounds each with Keigh Count Monday, was sent a mile in 1 :42%. He galloped easily, Colonel Shaw, conqueror of Lucky Hit and others in his first race of this year, went the same distance in 1 :43%. Lawley was sent one mile and a quarter in 2:09%. He went the quarter in :24 ; half mile in :49y5 ; three-1 quarters in 1 :1C% and the mile in 1 :43 handily. Dodgson, Golden Racket and Heigh Olga are other Derby hopefuls entered for the race that is bringing out Heigh Count Monday. Dowagiac showed much improvement over his previous training when he eased up seven-; eighths in 1 :27%. He went the quarter in :23% ; three-eighths in :35% ; half mile in :48V:; and three-quarters in 1:13%. It was an excellent move.
