McLeans Toro, one of the candidates for American Derby honors, was worked one mile and a quarter, the same distance that he will be asked to race Saturday, in 2:19%. The colt was not asked for his best speed at any stage and the onlookers were impressed with the colts good condition. The course, the outer one, was deep and holding and the McLean representative appeared fully able to cope with the going. At no stage of the work was he out of hand and he galloped under restraint most of the way. Trainer John Schorr, who is now at La-tonia, is due to arrive from there Friday to saddle the colt and also superintend his final light workout for his race. At present the colts training is under supervision of James Mooney, one of Mr. Schorrs assistants. O. H. Lehmanns Reigh Olga was another that had a workout this morning for his expected start in the Derby. He was worked over the one mile and an eighth outer course, negotiating the distance in 2 :0S%, the first mile in 1:54. Like Toro, he was not asked for his best speed, as he has been racing recently and is in prime condition. DERBY FAVORITE. The Le Mar Stock Farm Stable representative Misstep, favorite for the Derby, was only Cantered around the court and not permitted to indulge in any strenuous exercise. Trainer Mose Lowenstein will probably give him an ambitious workout Friday morning. The Fairmount Park Derby winner is fit and his followers feel sanguine that the colt will render a good account of himself in the running. Jack Higgins worked a mile easing in 1 :53 after the fifth race with jockey C. E. Allen up. Galahad, which is due from St. Louis tomorrow in charge of trainer P. Reuter, had been working well over the Fairmount track and will not require any additional preparation beyond a gallop over the course ta familiarize himself with the surroundings. Strolling Players invasion of these parts was attended by considerable interest among the horsemens colony here. He was given a close-up by many of the more astute turfmen. He appears in good condition and his winning success before being shipped no doubt has him up to a mile and a quarter race. He is said to have suffered at Churchill Downs at the start, which contributed to his poor showing. The same was said of Bobshela. but he had no mishaps subsequently in the Fairmount Derby, where he was opposed by some that beat him handily in the Kentucky Derby. Strolling Player will, on Saturday, have full opportunity in the small field to display his English wares and the western turf enthusiasts will be given a chance to note how he measures up to Misstep, Toro, Jack Higgins, Galahad and others. BOTES FOR FAST TRACK. Track superintendent II. D. Brown, Jr.. is sanguine that a fast track will prevail for Saturdays racing, providing no more rain falls. He will augment his track forces Thursday night and keep the large staff continuously at work during the night with harrows, rollers and drags to bring about a fast track, possibly for Fridays racing. C. K. G. Billings was an arrival from California to witness the running of the American Derby. Omar Khayyam, the only foreign-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby, galloped to victory in that coveted race carrying Mr. Billings colors. Mr. Billings has been out of thoroughbred racing for some time, indulging at present in his hobby of breeding — — — — — i ■ Contlcued. on twentieth page.
