CLOSE FINISH IN FEATURE « One Length Separates First Four in Maiden Purse. a Bare Knees Victorious, With Petit Pan Second and harming Lady Third-Zurich Runs Impressive Race. • COLLINSVILLE, 111., June 7— The Madison Purse, the feature of todays racing offered by the Fairmount Park Jockey Club, brought out a small but select field of five two-year-olds and resulted in the best and most exciting contest of the afternoon. E. K. Br sons juvenile filly Bare Knees, a. daughter of Lucky Hour — Herky Tee, ridden by jockey L. Edwards, raced to victory by a narrow margin, and in a close finish among the first four was winner by a half length from E. J. OConnells Petit Pan, a well backed one, while J. C. Milams Charming Lady took third place. Favoritism in this race was almost equally divided between Petit Pan and L. A. Lynes youngster Zurich, the latter an eligible for the Valley Stakes, to be decided here Saturday. Zurich was the real favorite, but only by a matter of a few points, as Petit Pan attracted almost equal backing. The performance of Zurich was peculiar though very impressive. Zurich, seemingly outpaced, raced in last place to the stretch turn when he could not get through on the inside of Houghtons Alibi and as they entered the stretch, with Zurich some distance back of the leaders, he was brought to the outside, but began running out. Despite jockey Lauschers efforts to keep the colt straight, Zurich continued to run out badly, particularly in the final fifty yards, but he finished going much the fastest of all at the end and but for his loss of ground by running wide would surely have been second and would likely have won, as it was he ran fourth, beaten less than one length for first money. The stewards stand was visited during the running of the Madison Purse by the Misses Irene and Nadine Smith, who, with Mayor F. A. Gareache. presented to the rider of the winner, jockey Edwards, a check for ,0. This presentation was made in behalf of the business men of Madison, a thriving little town for which the race was r.ameij. The races were decided over a greatly Improved track, the effects of its recent drenching having vanished and the Irack was in good condition. The colors of R. S. Clark were carried successfully in the opening race when the three-year-old Clutter took the measure of a good field of older rivals over the three-quarters mile route. The Battleaxe Stables Love Pirate, favorite, also raced well and, although not good enough for the winner, proved easily best of the other starters and secured second place. Scotland Yard finished third, a length -back of Fuss and Feathers, and the others, of which Never raced into third place. Clutter drew much attention also in this, though not near as much in demand as Love Firate. Bidden by the apprentice M. Knight, Clutter began fast and was away in a safe lead approaching the far turn, with Love Firate and Speedwell the other contenders. The remainder were outpaced to the last turn, with Coral Reef racing well back in the bunch. Swinging into the stretch, Shropshire called upon Love Firate for her best and, though she responded gamely. Love Pirate was unable to make an inroad upon ".utters lead, and the R. S. Clark filly continued on to make every post a winning one. Ten ordinary platers furnished a closely contested three-quarters mile race when the Irrepressible Stables six-year-old Play Hour, suddenly improved, upset calculations with a victory over Shining Light and Buz Fuz and secured the purse in the second race. Bach of the placed starters was in the nature of an outsider, particularly the winner and Buz Fuz, the latter being overlooked completely. Murky was installed a pronounced favorite, but failed to run back to her recent good race, which was over a muddy course and took unkindly to the fas-,ter going, which prevailed this afternoon.
