GOOD RACING AT BELMONT . • — Meadowbrook Steeplechase Provides 2,a Exciting Finish. Skedaddle the Winner — Another for Too High — Itoy.il .tranr.or Again Troves Worth In Hi:- sulvator Handicap. ♦ ■ NEW YORK. X. Y.. June 7.— There were only four sta iters in the Meadowbrook Steeplechase, but it resulted in an excellent finish with E. M. Byers Skedaddle winner from Babel and Bangle. This was the special feature of an excellent day of racing and. while rain threatened most of the afternoon, there was a big crowd on hand for the entertainment. The horses lost no time at the post, and Babel was first away, but "Specs" Crawford at once eased back, and it was Bangle that went out to show the way, though McNanue had him under a steadying restraint. Rabel was also under wraps and showing the way to Skedaddle, which was being placed with :;3.rne difficulty by Bierce, while Lighthouse brought up the rear. This was the order as the four swung out of the back field, and there Bierce was forced to snatch Skedaddle back to prevent his going to the frotit. Bangle was still showing the way with his ears pricking, and Babel was galloping just as strongly back of him. There was no change in the positions until going to the lower end of the field, where one turn of the big course had been completed. There Bierce moved up slightly on Skedaddle and, as a result. Crawford found himself pocketed back of B:mgl? and in danger of umping on the heels of the Hitchcock jumper, which was being caught at t:-.at stage of the running. In the backfield. Babel went up to Bangle and was soon lapp*-d on the son of Golden Orb. while Pierce still waited with Skedaddle. Rabel and Bangle raced along in close order for an eighth, when Babel drew out and, two fences from the finish, he looked the winner, but Bierce saved considerable ground on the turn into the stretch and, rushing Skedaddle up on the inside, he had soon joined Babel and Bangle. The Hitchcock four-year-old was coming again, and all three went into the last fence driving. Babel was first over, but, after landing, he swerved slightly and, in the short run home. Skedaddle outsped him. to be the winner by two lengths, while Bangle was three lengths further back but ten lengths before Lighthouse. The three-quarters of the Burgomaster Handicap, a dash over the Widencr course, resulted in a hair raising finish, with Sweepster from the Rancocas Stable just beating out Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilts Croyden which was making his first start since last September, while Henrietta Wi.dair from the Bosedale Stable was third, beating the Audley Farms Brincess Tina for that part of the purse. Then after the finish a claim of foul that had been lodged against the winner resulted in a long delay before the order of the finish was confirmed by the stewards. It was a battling finish right to the end, where Sweepster scored his nose victory. Samuel Ross swift running and consistent juvenile filly Too High added another purse to her good score when she was winner of the five-eighths mile race through the Widener course, which was the fifth. It was the Rancocas Stables Donnay that raced to second place by a narrow margin before Crystal Broom, from the Bineland Stable, and John E. Maddens Farmer was fourth. It is just as well for the reputation of many of the three-year-olds that J. P. Smiths Royal Stranger is not bountifully supplied with encasements in the three-year-old stakes. This imported son of Friars Marcus, since he was claimed by Smith for ,000. has proved one of the greatest bargains of the year. He again proved his worth in the running of the one mile aad an eighth Salvator Handicap, when, afier forcing a fast pace throughout, he was winner from Dangerous, from the Rosedale Stable. * What made the performance of exceptional merit was that he withstood the challenges of three different horses and then had enough left to withstand the rush of Dangerous.
