ENGLISH TURF NOTES tj i $ LONDON*, England. In England they got tremendous hurdle race and steeplechase fields for small stakes. The Manchester results for March 1 showed twenty-eight starters for the Ellesmere Steeplechase, of 90, two miles ; twenty-seven for the Selling Hurdle Race, of $.,710, two miles ; eighteen for the County Handicap Steeplechase, of 35, two miles : and twenty-one for the Four Miles Handicap Steeplechase, of 90. This was the race in which the 0,000 steeplechaser "White Park was killed, and the runners included Tipperary Tim, which won the Grand National four weeks later. Tipperary Tim, which carried 133 pounds, and was one of the 20 to 1 division, finished sixth. The following letter sent by F. Straker of Angerton, Morpeth, England, to "Audax," of the "Horse and Hound," will be of interest to many American owners of thoroughbred marcs : "You were interested in hearing of the operation performed on my mare Blue Dun, by J. B. Walker, which I told you about at the York rummer meeting last year. You will remember that Walker grafted a new thiyoid Klaad taken from a young horse under twelve months old. The mare had been harren for three years, and the result of the operation is that I have a filly foal, described to me as a good one, I hope I may have the luck to have- another next year by Abbots Trace. I thought you might like to know j the sequel."
