LARGE CROWD AT LATONIA » Ordinary Program Results in Interesting and Exciting Racing. ■ ♦— 1 Platers Monopolize Races at Covington Course — Mar Feathers Finally Graduates From Maiden Ranks. LATONIA, Ky., June 7.— Although the track was in the heaviest possible condition and the program an ordinary one, the summer weather that came to this section today resulted in an exceptionally large attendance for the third day of the current meeting. It was the first favorable day of the present meeting and ■ the clear skies and bright sunshine were decidedly more inviting morsels than the program. Enthusiasts were out in such large numbers as to make up an attendance that was well up to Latonias standard for a Thursday. Excepting only the fifth and sixth races, which brought out maidens from among the three-year-olds and over and were decided at three-quarters, platers had the call for all races. Without exception the cheaper racers were of the less capable variety, yet they succeeded in providing much interesting sport, punctuated with a number of close finishes. Form was well observed. The first of the races for maidens was run as the fifth race. It furnished a good contest and food for comment when Howard Oots War Feathers, the four-year-old daughter of Man o War, for which the late James Cox paid 1928.sh,CO0 as a yearling, proved the winner. She came from behind to vanquish Jack Rabbit by a half length after a spirited duel in the stretch and earned her first purse by a half length from her masculine three-year-old rival. The latter was an easy second over Golden Powder, the starter of Alfred Kane that attracted slightly the most backing. Golden Powder raced prominently to the stretch, where he tired, but outstayed Coloratura for second place. Three others started and. after racing in close pursuit of the leaders for three-eighths, they tired fast. The winner ran the distance in 1 :19%f an ordinary performance despite the trying condition of the +rack. Harned Brothers provided the winner of the first race, at three-quarters, in their Honest. He triumphed after a spectacular stretch duel with Fuss and Feathers, a neck Continued on twentieth page. LARGE CROWD AT LATONIA Continued from first page. Bust was fourth, were well beaten. After disposing of Seminola in the first half mile, Honest raced into a clear lead before reaching the stretch, where Fuss and Feathers soon challenged and engaged him in a stubborn battle for the final three-sixteenths. After closing a big gap when negotiating the stretch turn Scotland Yard made a fine but vain try to reach the leaders. The sorry performances of Seminola and Perfect Model were the sources of disappointment for many. After leaving the barrier and running straight for a short distance, Queen of Sheba wheeled. The second race, for two-year-olds, was also productive of a close fiiush, in which H. P. Headleys Courier, after having led from the first quarter, outstayed Ragus by a half length to be the winner. They were practically equal choices and this added to the keenness with which the stretch duel was watched. Ragus only barely missed reaching the lead inside the final eighth and only began faltering when within the shadow of the finish. Nos Redna took down third honors, many lengths in back of the more successful two. The race was at five-eighths. J. McPherson has decided to keep D. T. Matlacks Genial Host here to fill his engagement in the Enquirer Handicap, in preference to sending him to Fairmount Park for one of the stakes of that meeting also set for running on June 16.
