NOTED SIRE LINACRE DEAD One of Australias Most Successful Representatives in the Stud Passes Av/ay. Llnacre, one of the most celebrated sires associated with the Australian turf, has had to be destroyed. His passing draws attention to the fact that there have been few greater winners in the list of winning sires in that country. At the end of the 1927 season his progeny had gathered ,340,348 in prize money. Linacre was bred in England by Sir J. Robinson. He raced in that country as a two-, three- and four-year-old, winning the Champion Breeders Foal Plate at Derby. He was third in the Two Thousand Guineas and won the Atlantic Stakes twice, on one occasion beating the celebrated Orby, winner of the Epsom Derby in 1907. Linacre is by Wolfs Crag, son of the unbeaten Barcaldine. His dam, Lismaine, was by Isinglass — Kilkenny, by Ormonde — Bryonia, by Speculum — Hedge Rose, by Neptunis — Woodbine, by Stockwell. He was sent to Australia in 1908 and was knocked down to John Thompson and Son for ,750 at a sale held at William Inglis and Sons, Ltd. He was put to stud duty and in 1914 was represented by his first winners. Following is his record : Position on Year. Won. Sire List. litM $ 8,875 191." 87.135 4 19M !!0,105 2 1917 10!908 1 1918 131,415 1 1919 109.440 2 1930 120,750 2 1921 145,090 3 1922 135,290 3 192.", 128.525 3 1924 75.000 7 1925 07,150 1920 73,385 8 1927 52,280 Total won ,310,348 Although some go so far as to say that Linacre baa been the greatest sire in Australian turf history, there is some doubt as to this. Nevertheless, his recorel bears favorable cempa icon with that of Maltster, which has been conspicuous in the winning sires iist for twenty-one seasons and, with an aggregate of ,450,815, his yearly average of winnings lias been 9,088. Linacre, on the other hand, has been before the public for fourteen years, and his average is 5,739. Of course, in the first few years of Maltsters activities as a sire prizes were not as big £s was the cass when Linacre commenced his stud duty. But, allowing for this, ant. also admitting that Maltster enjoys a better recorel, there is no gainsaying that Linacre has been responsible for wonderful figures. Following is the record of Maltster: Position on Year. Won. Sire List. 1907 $ 19,905 11 1908 43.075 4 1909 09,890 2 1910 384,800 1 1911 138,145 1 1912 104,785 1 1913 111,805 2 1914 157,900 1 1915 120.370 1 1910 70,030 4 1917 73,840 4 1918 48.040 5 1919 30,915 1920 01,335 11 1921 41.480 1922 23,820 1923 23,775 1924 11.430 1925 25,000 1920 15,095 1927 8,000 Total won ,450,815 While Linacre was represented by some fair long distance runners, he was really a sire of sprinters. Among the best for which he has been responsible are Baltic Sea, winner of a Breeders Plate ; Sweet Lady and Eulacre, winners of the Gimcrack Stakes ; Linaway, Olenacre, Panaere, Dameacre, Garlin, Liquid Fire, Celosia, Lisnavane, Palm Leaf, Red Signal, Bellambi, Sweet Lady and Lingle. The last named finished second in the Melbourne Cup.
