NEW YORK, N. Y., June 12.— Benjamin Blocks Mordine, ridden by L. Fator, was the winner of the Rockaway Handicap, which was the best offering on the second day of the Aqueduct meeting. At the end Mordine showed the way to Caroler, from the Rosedale Stable, while W. J. Salmons Devonshire was third, before F. W. Barlows Gracious Gift. Fifteen of the overnight eligibles started and the race was worth ,275 to the winning owner. The field was a fractious one at the start, but left in good alignment. Sarmaticus, however, was in early trouble and was forced back, while Mordine was drawing away fast and assumed command. Caroler raced after him, with the others closely grouped. When the field neared the stretch turn Caroler was under pressure in an effort to overhaul the leader, but Mordine had something in reserve and when called upon shook off the challenger in a convincing manner. Gracious Gift moved at the sama time, but Workman encountered repeated difficulties and was blocked. Devonshire, from a slow beginning, was gaining steadily and in the final eighth finished with a rush that carried him to third place. Through the final sixteenth Mordine proved best and had something left in reserve at the end. The Rockaday Claiming Stakes carried an added value of ,000 and is one of the annual fixtures of the summer meeting. Ideal racing conditions prevailed and the crowd was well above the usual Tuesday average, due no doubt to the large fields which staited in every race but one, the fourth of the day. Twenty maiden two-year-olds faced the starter in the first race of the day and the winner came from an unexpected quarter when Please, from the Mendham Stable, was winner over the Fair Stables Shrew, while J. P. Whites Haughty was third. There was no delay at the post and the field left in good alignment. Shrew was hustled into the lead with a rush and showed the way in the early running to Skoot Clown, Haughty and Speedy Shaw, while Please was several lengths back. Please, under energetic riding, responded to hard urging and in a drive, wore down Shrew, The latter showed a good burst of early-speed, but was tiring at the end. Haughty ran well throughout and had no excuses. . Continued on twenty-fourth page. MORDINE HANDICAP WINNER Continued from first page. A thrilling finish came out of the second race, which was a high class claiming dash, at six and a half furlongs, when F. M. Byers Taras Hall, under a vigorous finisb by the apprentice G. Schreiner, was returned the victor over Sandy, from the Rollins* Plains Stable, ridden by McAtoe, with M. A. Silvers Indian Love Call third. West mount was fractious at the post and delayed the start considerably. The break was a gocd one and the first sixteenth found Westmcunt showing the way to Sanily, With John Cavanagh third and the others closely grouped. There was no change in the running positions until the stretch turn was reached and it was here that McAtee forged to the front with Sandy. The latter quickly opened up a safe lead and an eighth from home appeared a certain winner. However, Taras Hall, which settled into his stride, passed the stretch turn and came with long strides that were not to be denied and in a hair-raising finish got up in the final stride. Indian Love Call, which met with light buffeting about the first part, closed resolutely when clear and was a driving third, but did not seriously menace the leaders. W. R. Coes Black Maria proved the easiest kind of a winner of the Catalan Handicap, which was for three-year-olds and over at one mile. Ridden by Laverne Fator and eompleteing a double for him, she had but little trouble in showing the way to Dangerous, from the Rosedale Stable, and with the overmatched Lass o Cowrie a distant and tired third. The start was a moving one and Lass o Cowrie set the early pace on sufferance. Black Maria assumed the lead when ready and once in the van, never left the result in doubt. Dangerous, although hard ridden in the stretch, finished gamely but could not overhaul the winner. Black Maria negotiated the distance in 1 :389s to account for her first victory of the year. She had started twice previously. Jockey Laverne Pator was the outstanding star of the day at Aqueduct when he scored three victories, completing the triple with Donnay for his contract employer, the Rancocas Stable. Donnay took the measure of a well matched band of juveniles at five-eighths mile and showed the way to Harry Payne Whitneys Bargello, while Chat Over, from the R. T. Wilson stable, was third. The start was a good one, and Fator took every advantage of the speed possessed by his mount and drew away into a safe lead. Bargello, on the other hand, was forced to lose much ground when he was carried wide passing the elbow and through the final eigh*h he gained steadily when put under pressure and was wearing the winner down. Donnay at the end had a scant half length advantage, while Bargello was a handy second over Chat Over. C. C. Winfreys Manchu, ridden by the apprentice H. Gotterup, proved an easy winner of the final race of the day. Manchu showed the way to Edward Arlingtons Fried-jof Nansen and Star Gold, from the Sagamore Stable. The winner dominated the running throughout. P. S. P. Randolph claimed Polisson out of the second race Monday from R. B. Strass-berger for ,5C0.
