IRONSIDES EASY WINNER F , • Gerry Representative Carries Top C Weight and Scores in Handicap. ♦ Valkyr Wheels at Slart and Is Left at Post A At iu Acjuiduct Feature — Manwell Wins Third Itace. NEW YORK. N. Y., June 13.— For a feature race the Queens County Jockey Club C offered the Broadway Handicap at Aqueduct c today. It was a mile and a sixteenth race t to for the three-year-olds and resulted in rather t an easy victory for Robert L. Gerrys Iron- v sides, the topweight of the party, when he S led home Miss Peggie B. Baileys Bradley s h Peggy, with Harry Payne Whitneys Tantivy, s an added starter, the one to race third before t the Wheatley Stables Nixie. The race was ■ worth ,175 to the winner. Right at the rise of the barrier. Gifford A. Cochrans Valkyr, o which had boon acting badly, wheeled and re- t fused to leave. It was unfortunate that she n seemed to be a contender before the race. ■ and there was real disappointment over her I being left. v With perfect weather for the sport there t to was a big crowd on hand and the sport fur- V nished was excellent, with large fields start- f ing in most of the races. While Valkyr I-wheeled and was left in the Broadway Handicap, Bradleys leggy was particularly alert, t and got away to set the pace. Tantivy I was away fast and was right after her, t with Ironsdies and One Hour not far back, J and Nixie a bit slower to be under way. It did not take Ironsides long to dispose of Tantivy, but it was another matter to t catch Bradleys Peggy. The filly was in a -u running mood, and she was racing along two ■ lengths in front before the stretch was • reached. I McAtee had Ironsides going smoothly back ■ of her, but Tantivy was soon having plenty £ of trouble to hold third place. Workman I went to the whip before the stretch was I reached, and he had to keep working on i his mount right to the end of the race. Tan- £ tivy responded to the call and, while Ironsides raced by Bradleys Peggy in the final eighth, Tantivy was driven out to save third from Nixie. The Wheatley Stable filly closed a considerable gap when too late, while One Hour weakened badly in the run home. j Don Q.. the only starter, cut no figure in the running. . A good finish marked the decision of the opening six and a half furlongs dash for platers, when H. R. Dulaneys Single Star just lasted to beat home Samuel Ross Verdi, t while M. A. Silvers Hat Brush took third , place. Nineteen went to the post in this race . and Single Star was the one to force the . pace virtually all the way, with Verdi in . closest pursuit. Hat Brush met with some slight early interference, but he quickly worked his way up on the outside of the leaders and the three placed horses virtually dominated the running throughout. , ANOTHER HITCHCOCK SUCCESS. The success through the steeplechase field j that has attended the silks of Thomas Hitch- , cock continue to hold good at Aqueduct and 1 his Devil Kin was winner of todays jumping event from Frcdden Rock of the Brookmeade ; Stable, with Gold Knight, from the Greentree | Stable, finishing rather a distant third. There ■ were three that did not complete the course, ■ Stop Flirting unseating Hardy at the first : fence, Jefferson Livingstons Rigveda went down at the last and Mowbray was pulled up • when thoroughly beaten. Devil Kin and Fredden Rock were so much 1 better than the others of the field that it [ really amounted to a two-horse race. Jeff-cott • permitted Fredden Rock to go into a L long early lead and the old fellow was just t a bit rank. Fitzgerald was placing Devil Kin back of that pace, but he was within striking distance and Bold Knight was outrunning the - others. On the second turn of the course Devil Kin i moved up to Fredden Rock and the pair of f them raced in close attendance on one another • all through the back field. At the top of the course Fredden Rock stumbled rather P badly running on the flat and Devil Kin drew r out until he was not afterwards seriously threatened, to be home the winner by half a dozen lengths. Fredden Rock was twice that t distance before Bold Knight and he trailed j along before Louvaun and Marche Militaire, which was ridden by Mr. Bostwick. Rigveda j was going well when he came down at the last fence and. fortunately, Dawson was not j hurt, remounting to ride back to the scales. Cheap platers, to race one mile, was the third offering and it went to Manwell, racing , for H. H. Goodwin. Frank Shorts Fire Opal j raced to second place and Joseph Shal leeks Metanor was third. Manwell began well and had speed enough l! to show the way from the start to the finish. Through the early racing and into the stretch u Melmor was Riving him plenty of argument, • but through the last eighth the Knglish gelding tired as though just a bit short and I then it was that Fire Opal outfinished him to take second place. Shiras was one that had j no excuses and tired after being close up, while Afton, after beginning a bit slowly, was badly messed about in the running and did not run within.pounds of his true form. RED BANK NARROWLY. There was a nice hand of maiden juveniles s started in the five-eighths mile fifth race, and it saw a close finish when the Greentree g Stables Red Bank led home E. R. Bradleys - Begin Over, with William Zeigler, Jr.s s Chianti a distant third. , Red Bank began wc.l and dominated the e race, though he lost ground on the elbow v of the course when he wen*: out a bit. Chianti tj and Begin Over were racing after him and the Bradley colt was racing on the inside, having saved considerable ground. At the end Red Bank was doing his best ;t to he winner by half a length, while Chianti tj tired, and Begin Over beat him by .three 0 lengths for second place. A disappointment in this was Prancing g Step, which, after leaving the post slowly, showed no speed and finished last of the eleven that raced. The mile of the Borrow Claiming Handicap the final race, attracted the smallest field of the day when only four went to the post. This resulted in as easy score for Mrs. J. Simpson Deans Allans Bay when he scored by a Rood margin from T. W. OBriens Inspector C, which was making his first appearance since last November. Dear Lady was thiid. and Gold Bet, the ether starter, after having been snatched up in the early running, was last.
