RECRUIT TO OWNERS RANKS Chicagoans Showing Increased Interest in Racing, Many Purchasing One or More Horses. The forthcoming- meeting at Arlington Park, conducted under the auspices of the American National Jockey Club, will witness the addition to the ranks of thoroughbred owners more local recruits than during any year since the revival of racing around Chicago. This is evident by the large number of recently established racing stables of local ownership that have applied for stable room, or have otherwise signified an intention of participating in the racing at Arlington Park. Included in the number are Eugene Byfield, of the Hotel Sherman ; Mrs. Roy Carruthers, wife of the managing director of the American National Jockey Club ; Dan M. Jackson, member of the Illinois Commerce Commission ; John R. Thompson, Jr., one of the vice-presidents ot the American National Jockey Club ; Otto Berz, well known business man ; John Marsch, George N. Cardozo, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Swickard, M. Deatherage, F. W. Gilliland and S. W. Klein. Mrs. Carruthers, who has been an ardent devotee of racing for a number of years, is the owner of a trio of juveniles in the stable being trained by Walter Grater, veteran Kentucky horseman. The names selected for the youngsters, all of which are well bred, are Jessie Lillard, Aye Ready and Sallie Jessie. Racketeer, a promising two-year-old which is also in the keeping of trainer Grater, is the only norse owned by Mr. Byfield, but that popular young hotel man intends acquiring more in the near future. John R. Thompson, Jr., also intends adding to his turf holdings. He became identified with racing as an owner last Friday by purchasing Minotaur, just prior to the running of the Preakness, and. had the satisfaction of seeing the colt finish second in Pimlicos valuable stake. Dan M. Jackson has a stable of live good horses, which he will race under the nom de course of the Allegheny Stable. John Marsch is the owner of three splendid looking two-year-olds that are being trained by Jesse Spencer. They have been named Camp Boss, J. Spencer and Prince Atheling. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Swickard, wnose establishment is in charge of Tommy Taylor, have among others Chip, a three-vear-old gelding by Supremus — Sheila Ryve, taat they have named for the American Classic, and other stakes at Arlington Park. Ray Ruddy, a three-year-old, is the best in the band owned by Otto Berz. The stable of S. W. Klein, which comprises all two-year-olds, is being trained by F. F. Brant.
