® ® KENTUCKY GOVERNORS TRIBUTE TO WINNER 3 • LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 18.— The Hon. Flem D. Sampson, governor of Kentucky, presented the gold cup to the owner of the Derby winner, paying the horse the following eloquent tribute : "A new page has been written today in the history of the kingdom of the horse by a new-comer, Clyde Van Dusen, as he sped past the finish leading a spectacularly fleet field of contenders. He has won the Kentucky Derby of 1929. His fame shall never cease. The thrill of triumph and glory centers around this panting, pulsing, prancing steed of sound bone and strong sinew, of stout heart and ambitious spirit. How like the human athlete he has challenged, he has contended and he has triumphed, and his pride swells — he is exultant. "This is but natural, for here at Churchill Downs are gathered each Derby day, the choicest, the bravest, the most daring, the handsomest and the swiftest of horse kind from all the earth. He has triumphed in a fair contest in the presence of an immense, acclaiming throng. "In consequence of this contest, the name of Clyde Van Dusen becomes part and parcel of the classic history of the turf in Kentucky and with lightning swiftness, fame shall bear that name around the world. "In recognition of the endurance, speed and superiority of this horse, we crown him with a garland of American beauty roses. "To his proud owner we deliver, on behalf of Churchill Downs, a gold trophy engraved as testimonial of the skill and judgment he has shown in the selection and training of thoroughbred horses as reflected in this 1929 Kentucky Derby winner. We whole-heartedly join the owner in acknowledging the undisputed ability of the jockey, the worthy rider of this lew master of the turf."
