SPENCER FILLY WINS I » Luck Deciding Factor in Calumet Purse at Homewood. Canaan Recovers Best Form Quickly and Lowers One Mile Track Record to 1:36%. p ol of « HOMEWOOD, 111.. June 10.— J. Spencers Willa, favored by a light weight of ninety- P four pounds, scored a lucky victory in the V Calumet Purse. Montanaro finished in sec- F, ond place and Account headed the others. b The one mile was run in 1:37%. Willa was lucky to be clear of the others when a m mixup occurred on the first turn because cf -Aquaplane bolting. Earl Sanded Safety Pin was a sufferer as well as Montanaro. The -latter was just making a fast move and i was checked when several of the others in advance of him tried to pull clear of Aquaplane. , Willa benefited when the mixup came and drew clear, but Montanaro, coming steadily in the stretch, forced Neal, on Willa, to ride hard to maintain a half length advantage. Montanaro was going the fastest at the finish and at a longer distance would have won. Account also showed a good effort here and closed a big gap from a slow beginning to land in third place. Perfect weather was the order this afternoon and it helped to bring out the large crowd that witnessed the racing. GKEAT IMPROVEMENT. The Le Mar Stock Farms Canana, which I j J on Saturday was beaten off in the race won by his stablemate. Misstep, showed an amazing form reversal today, when he $ $ won over one mile and seventy yards in 1:41%. and established a new track record, clipping nearly two seconds from the former one lie ran the mile in 1:36%, which was nearly a second better than Misstep raced Saturday. . There were five starters in the race, with betting support so steady for Canaan that he ruled the favorite. In the earlier stages of « * the race he did not promise much, as Long-ridge, Dowagiac and Blessefield raced in ad- vance of him. He began finding his stride 1 when approaching the stretch and came like c a flash to pass in succession Blessefield, Longridge and Dowagiac. The latter would ■ 1 not be denied .until the final strides, but j Canaan held him safe all during the last six- f teenth. Longridge finished in third place, far in advance of Blessefield. The latter delayed the start by his actions at the post. j The fifteen maiden two-year-olds that in- augurated the racing were an unwieldy band, but began in fairly close alignment, with , Vladimir taking command at once, followed by Roval Equity and Miss Nobody. The leaders" were joined in the stretch racing by Lyda Mae and Cheng Tu. Lyda Mae proved , the gamer in the final drive and succeeded m winning by a head from Royal Equity, with Cheng Tu a nose back and a similar margin in advance of the fast-finishing Handiworker. JOE ENGEL SCORES. Joe Engel carried E. K. Brysons colors to a victory in the second race, in which thirteen platers started with Narva, former winner here, the favorite. Narva was probably pounds the best, but McCrosson made all manner of blunders in his riding of the filly. with the result that she was beaten a matter of inches by Joe Engel, Bruno and Walter R. Bruno succeeded to the lead after Princeton gave way in the last eighth but, in turn, could not withstand the rush of Joe Engel. Walter R. came from far back in the last eighth to land in third place. Some of the highly regarded youngsters tried conclusions in the third race, and it resulted in a victory for Lost Agnes, which beat Patroness, with Outer Harbor in third place. Lost Agnes displayed high speed but was probably lucky to finish in advance of Patroness. The latter almost lost her rider at the start, when she began quickly and raced with Lost Agnes for the first half mile. Ericksons superior ride gave Lost Agnes the edge in the final eighth. Outer Harbor may-reverse the decision with the pair that led him home should they meet in the near future. The sixth race resulted in an upset when Irene T. and Jack Hawksley fought out the finish, the former winning by a neck with Suitor in third place. Exquisite and Tamina were the favored ones in the race, but the latter showed a dull performance and Exquisite, after going prominently for half a mile, began tiring and finished in last place. Suitor, at one time, threatened to make a runaway of it, but he was headed by Irene T. and Jack Hawksley in the last sixteenth. Jack Hawksley would have won at a longer distance. C. Meyer has been engr.ged by Mrs. E. Denemark and will ride the horses in her stable. The stable to be raced here by W. S. Kilmer, which will consist of ten horses ia charge of A. G. Blakely, will leave New York Wednesday and arrive at Washington Park the following day.
