LATONIA DERBY DAY ■ |C r w Ten Prospective Contestants for Old Established Fixture ♦ Clyde Van Dusen and African Expected to Dominate the Running Over the Stamina-Testing Distance of One Mile and a Half ♦ LATONIA, Ky., June 21.— The Latonia Derby, lacking the importance and colo* of the Kentucky Derby, yet a rich and valued annual event in the way of determining the respective qualities of the best three-year-olds of each year, comes up for its forty-seventh running over the Covington track Saturday. . - Although it properly does not enjoy such a wide interest as the Churchill Downs fixture, it is, and has for the past score of years, attracted patronage from among the great army of racing enthusiasts of this section. In that respect this year is no exception, and while the field that will contest tomorrows running is hardly as high class as might have been expected -from the brilliant list of 134 eligibles, it is one of the best in recent runnings. A keen interest is noted ;on every side and preparations made for the occasion reveal high confidence on the part of the track management that with favorable weather, the race will attract a capacity throng. Most noted of the nine colts and geldings and one filly named overnight for the race, at one mile and a half, is Herbert Gardners Clyde Van Dusen, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, which will essay to carry top weight of 126 pounds and endeavor to retrieve prestige lost when he met decisive defeat in last Saturdays running of the American Derby at Washington Park. The capable unsexed son of Man o War — Uncles Lassie is in fine physical trim, according to Clyde Van Dusen, his trainer, and there is no little confidence about his stable that he will account for honors in Saturdays race. CONCEDES MUCH WEIGHT. His impost of 126 pounds will require him to concede no less than five pounds to the next highweight of the small field, the Jacques Stables Essare. The son of Light Brigade — Wistaria, however, is a doubtful starter, and if he is absent from the starting field the Kentucky Derby winner will make concessions of not less than eight pounds to each of the others. Perhaps the most foremost of Clyde Van Dusen s rivals is Richard T. Wilsons African, the son of Alambala. which finished third in the American Derby and ran Blue Larkspur to a close finish in the Belmont Stakes. Like the Gardner gelding, African came here from Washington Park and continues to retain the fine form which permitted him to make such fine showings in the two mentioned stakes. Consensus of opinion indicates that there is little to choose from among the others. On the basis of eight starters, the race wdl have a value of not less than 0,350 and the Latonia Jockey Club will be required to increase the added money from 3,000 to 0,000 if Clyde Van Dusen is returned the winner. The additional ,000 is a special reward if the winner is also the Kentucky Derby victor. Several of the intended starters had their final preparations for the long race this morning. Clyde Van Dusen, in company with Gardner Derr, was sent five-eighths in 1 :024 easily, while Boris went seven-eighths in 1 :23 handily. Coloratura was with him for the first half mile of the trial. Amsterdam was timed in 1 :06% for an easily done five-eighths and Essare galloped a quarter of a mile in twenty-five seconds.
