OHIO STATE DERBY Outlook Bright for Best Race in History of Event. • Voltear, Upset Lad, Black Diamond, Silverdale, Thistle Fyrn Among Thirteen Named. CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 21.— It appeared today that the Bainbridge Breeders and Racing Association was certain of making good its early promise to provide this year the "best Ohio State Derby in its history." This fixture is down for decision Saturday and the field of probable starters is fully up to expectations. Thirteen were named in the overnight entries, headed by Voltear, winner of the Chesapeake Stakes, and Upset Lad, winner of the Florida Derby. This pair will carry top weight of 121 pounds. W. J. Salmon has entered Black Diamond, which preformed creditably in the American Derby after running fine races in Maryland and Canada during the spring. Black Diamond, with 118 pounds up, will be conceded a strong chance to win. Another colt which has attracted wide attention in his Kentucky racing is E. B. McLeans Silverdale. He started also in the American Derby, but was not a keen contender. Silverdale won six consecutive races at Churchill Downs and Latonia. The chief doubt concerning him is as to his ability to go a long route. His winning races were at distances from three-quarters of a mile to six and a half furlongs. j Voltear, the probable favorite, and the other colts mentioned, are likely to encounter very strong opposition from several fillies. In fact, George Collins Thistle Fyrn, which finished second to Karl Eitel in the Fairmount Derby, may be conceded to have a rare opportunity of annexing a Derby for the glory of her sex. She has up the same weight that she carried in the Fairmount Derby, 113 pounds. She has often beaten high-class platers and overnight handicap horses in her winter and spring racing. Two other fillies which are not to be considered light are Dinah Did Upset and Helen Dean. Dinah Did Upset won the Derby Trial Purse here a few days ago, beating Voltear in the bargain, but the distance of that race was only a mile and she had up only ninety-eight pounds. She clipped a full second from the track record. The others are an evenly balanced band, including Yam Toy, a recent winner of the Paradise Stock Farm Stable ; War Hawk. Clubhouse, Lady Guinevere, War Instigator and Bather. n .
