SALMON STRING FORMIDABLE Twenty Horses in Band Under Dwyers Care at Belmont. Swinfield ami Perfect Play Kentucky IJrby and PrcalfJicss Stakes Candidates Scliacfer Jockey. NEW YORK. N. Y., April 1. W. J. Salmon will have a formidable stable racing over the Metropolitan tracks this year according to interested observers at Belmont Parle. The horses are in charge of Pat Dwyer, who succeeded Tom Ileal ey as trainer. Dwyer was associated with Healey for thirty-six years as foreman and assistant and is well versed in all branches of training. The stable numbers twenty head, which will comprise the main division. Twelve two-year-olds are in the lot and they are homebreds. The older horses are Dr. Freeland, Black Diamond, Swinfield, Perfect Play, Snowflake, Pious, Dunnellon and Black Panther. Swinfield and Perfect Play have been named for the Preakness and Kentucky Derby, while Snowflake has been named for tlie Pimlico and Coaching Club American Oaks. Dwyer is moving his charges along smoothly and to date they have done all that has been asked of them. Swinfield, Perfect Play and Snowflake will be included in the shipment which will be sent to Havre de Grace and they will receive their final training for the Pimlico prize over the Baltimore, course. Perfect Play is by Fair Play, from Perfect Peach, by Persimmon and is a maiden. He started seven times last year and finished in third place twice, failing to gain a share of the purse in the other races. He filled out nicely over the winter and Dwyer has hopes that he will display his real worth this year. COLT OF PROMISE. Swinfield. the black son of Swinburne Careful, started thirteen times last year and accounted for two races, finished second twice eind third four times, earning ,900. This fellow is another that showed promise last year and will be given every opportunity to display his ability this year. Snowflake, the filly, earned 9,200 in her two-year-old season. The bulk of this sum was won in the Endurance Stakes at Bowie. In this race she earned 6,550 and defeated the best of her age that could be mustered against her. Among those she defeated was Ned O., which is highly regarded for the Kentucky Derby. Her main objective, according to present plans, will be the Coaching Club Oaks to be run at Belmont Park. The older horses are in perfect physical condition. They have been galloped steadily and have been allowed to move along six furlongs in 1 :17. On the other hand, the two-year-olds have turned in sharper three furlong trials. They have been timed for the distance in :37 seconds. The youngsters are well educated at the barrier and according to the assistant starters, are among the best turned out in years. 0 Black Panthar. which was shipped to Kentucky last fall to enter the stud for a short season, was returned to Belmont Park and was placed back in training. The horse developed leg trouble last season and trainer Healey decided at that time that a long rest would do the horse good. His judgment was vindicated. The injured leg appears to be in splendid condition and in gallops the horse does not favor it. At the stable it was stated that the mares that had been booked to Black Panther had been mated to Display. DISPLAYS HALF BROTHER. The best two-year-old in the barn, according to Dwyer, is a half brother to Display, named Mad Career. This fellow is a bay colt by Mad Hatter, from Cicuta. In speaking of him, Dwyer becomes enthusiastic. Sensible, level headed and with a perfect disposition, coupled with an ability to run. summarizes the trainers description. His other colts and fillies are a nice looking lot and have shown ability to run. They have not been called upon for their best speed and will not be until the weather and other conditions become settled. The Maryland division of the stable, which is now at Bowie in charge of Jack Pryce, will be augmented before the Havre de Grace meeting opens. Dr. Freeland. Black Diamond, Swinfield, Perfect Play and Snow-flake are possible candidates for early Maryland racing. Those horses have engagements at that point and if their training condition later warrants shipment, will be vanned over. Several two-year-olds will also be sent along with the older horses. Battleship, which failed in the Florida Derby, is in the Pryce division at Bowie. L. Schaefer will do most of the stables riding this summer on the New York tracks. Dwyer will not go to Maryland, but will campaign the main division at Jamaica.
