MARKS COLTS IN LIMELIGHT Maudlin and Morsel Display Most Speed at Louisville. Work One Mile In 1:50 Over Fast Track liidwill Horses to Race at Lexington. LOUISVILLE. Ky., April 1. Maudlin, the Derby candidate of Leo J. Marks, trained by Mose Lowensteiri, was given the most ambitious workout of the morning at Churchill Downs. The colt was paced by Morsel, another of his own age, and the pair worked a mile in 1:50. J. Flanagan was astride Maudlin and Clay Butler had the leg up on Morsel. The pair began at the three-quarters post and had a stiff wind behind them going down the back stretch, but it blew into their faces through the stretch run on the front side. They were caught in the fractional time of :26, :52, 1 :20 for the first three-quarters. The track was fast but deep in dust, clouds of the fine sand whirling about with such velocity as to at times obscure horse and rider from the view of the trainer. Maudlin shows steady improvement in his work and may prove a formidable opponent for the crack Derby horses on the day of the big race. Roll Em Down was given a nice workout, going alone for a mile in 1 :56. Trainer Everman sent him along for the first three-quarters, his exercise boy easing him up to the seven-eighths in 1 :31, after negotiating the first three-quarters in :13, :26, :3y, :52. 1:06, 1:20. Mr. Delozier was on hand to see the colt work and was much impressed with his showing. Trainer Everman, a veteran at the game of preparing horses for stake engagements, feels that he has a real Derby candidate in this son of Tea Caddy. Roy Slomer sent C. W. Bidwills Derby eligible, Tea Cracker, three-eighths in :37. Others in the Derby colony were given slow canters and gallops to keep them limbered up for future trials. Assistant starter McGinnis was busy this morning schooling horses at the barrier at the Downs. H. Neusteter was an arrival from St. Johns Park this morning. He has taken up Nick Cullop and George Stack, which were turned out all winter and, with Profiteer and a two-year-old named Dospa, by Dodge, will ship to Lexington to race at the coming meeting. " Mrs. Eva Delozier sent her three-year-old filly, Lulie Belle, to the Downs this morning, where she will be prepared for racing by Jim Everman. Roy Slomer will ship all of the racing stock of C. W. Bidwill from the Downs to Lexington Thursday. The string consists of the Derby candidates Tea Cracker and Dica-dome, besides eight other horses. McLean, to the Downs in three weeks time. Crossbones is the Derby candidate in this racing establishment.
