THE HEATHEN EASILY ! Wins Valuable Harford Handicap in Convincing Style. Balko and On Her Toes Second and Third Respectively Showery Weather Encountered. HAVRE DE GRACE. Md.. April 16. The Heathen, racing for C. H. Pierce, and Balko. : from the Sagamore Stable, but both sent to the post by J. H. Stotler and, accordingly coupled, -were first and second in the running of the 10,000 Harford Handicap this afternoon. Then third and fourth there came two other stablemates in On Her Toes and Battleship Gray, the pair that bore the silks of Samuel D. Riddles Glen Riddle Farm. The running had a net value of 0,200 to the "Winner, and there were eleven that went to the post for the six furlongs. For this first of the 0,000 offerings of the Harford Association, the conditions were about as disagreeable as could be imagined. The day was cold and raw, with a drizzling rain falling most of the afternoon. This had some effect on the track, but it was surprisingly good under such conditions. The weather, naturally, had its effect on the attendance, but the lure of the sport attracted a surprisingly large number. Starter Milton had no end of trouble with the Harford field and it was sixteen minutes before, he could get an alignment that was satisfactory. The start was a good one, though Nostaw broke slowly, while his stable-mate, First Mission, led the company from the stalls. BEGINS QUICKLY. The Heathen, always a rapid" breaker, was ! quickly showing the way, and Coltiletti made ! full use of his speed when he rushed him i along until he was three lengths clear. There s he took him under steadying restraint, and I it was On Her Toes that was racing after him and also well within herself as Sande s set still and watched every move of the i leader. He was content to keep the filly under - restraint. The disagreeable weather resulted in the ; companion feature to the Harford Handicap being reduced to a three-horse race. This 3 was the five and a half furlongs dash for r three-year-old fillies, and the only acceptances - were Ral Parrs Her Grace, H. P. "Whitneys Murky Cloud, and the Montpelier r Farms Lost Agnes. That is the order in l which they finished. "Will Travers waited a long time with Mrs. "V. M. Duncans Little America, the juvenile i daughter of High Cloud and Donna Barton, but he was rewarded by having her winner r of the opening four and a half furlongs dash i for maiden fillies. Travers had this miss at t the. Miami Jockey Club meeting, but after r one start there he put her away for later r racing and this afternoon was her second appearance under silks. She left no doubt of the result after the first furlong when Falls rushed her into a long lead and, saving ground all the way, she was winner by a length and a half. Overshady, from the Kevada Stock Farm Stable, was second practically all the way to finish in that position and third was the portion of J. P. Jones Hieaway when she led home Cary T. Graysons Bright Comet by a wide margin. MUD GOOD IX MUD. Mud, from the Justa Farm Stable, was a galloping winner of the second race when he made a show of Mrs. W. J. Potters Genuine, with Shipmaster, racing for S. D. Riddle, the one to finish third over Al Westons Macil. "While the track was good, as the time of the race would indicate, there was a slippery top and it may have had its effect here, for Mud lasted better than has been his custom. Genuine jumped out into an early lead, but 2.1ud was right after him and, after leaving the back stretch, had joined him and the pair raced lapped for almost a sixteenth. They were out alone well before Shipmaster, while Macil and Danish Prince, the only other starters, were further back. It was on the stretch turn that Mud shook off Genuine and the race was as good as over when .he came home winner by six lengths. Genuine was doing his level best and was lengths before Shipmaster, which led Macil by a length. There was a great finish came out of the mile and a sixteenth of the third race when W. L. Brodies Aregal was up to beat W. N. Adrians Prickly Heat in the last stride, with Continued on twentieth page. THE HEATHEN EASILY Continued from first page. W. J. Owens Voyage just saving third from Mrs. R. Pollards Fair Argument. In this race it was Voyage that cut out the pace, through the early racing Meander went with him, but it was not long before Prickly Heat was in third place and racing alongside Immortal, while Aregal was last of the six that performed, but galloping along smoothly. Fair Argument moved up as Meander faltered, and he was giving chase to Voyage as the field swung out of the back stretch, with Prickly Heat still third and under a slight restraint. Fisher waited with Prickly Heat until rounding into the stretch. There he called on the old gelding, and he readily disposed of the leaders. But just as he made his move Aregal charged upon the outside and, under a furious drive, his move was good enough to land him the winner in the last stride.
