GALLANT KNIGHT SPEEDS Turns in Fastest Mile of Early Season at Churchill Downs. 1 Is Under Slight Restraint as He Finishes Distance in 1:42 Billy Champ Among Others on Track. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 19. Gallant Knight, the 3-year-old son of Bright Knight Ethel Gray, owned by the Audley farm stable, which is receiving his Derby prep at Churchill Downs, turned in the fastest mile of the present season at the Louisville track this morning, when he stepped the distance in 1:42, going the latter part faster than the first part and being under slight restraint at the finish. Jockey H. Schutte had the leg up on the colt, which trainer Spence worked without pacemakers for the first time this season. He went to the first eighth, after breaking from the stand, in :124,and, quarter in :26, three furlongs in :39, half in :52. five furlongs in 1:05, six furlongs in 1:17, going his last quarter in :25. The brown colt pulled up in good shape, cooled out nicely and appeared none the worse for his trial, after being, done up and returned to his stall. This winner of the Breeders Futurity at Lexington last fall is a real Derby threat despite his more formidable rivals. Silas Mason, part owner of the Warm stable, was a visitor at the Downs and saw trainer J. T. Taylor work his Derby charge, Billy Champ, an easy mile in 1:47. The colt went his first six furlongs in :2G, :52, 1:19, being trailed by The Nut, and could have gone faster had his conditioner so desired. Trainer Cecil Howard stepped John Marschs Derby colt. Play Ball, a good five-eighths in 1 :02 and eased up in 1 :19 for three-quarters. C. N. Lewis sent his Derby candidate, Devlin, with Charles Bender in the saddle, three-quarters in 1:19, after negotiating the first eighth in :ll43, quarter in :2t, three-eighths in :38, half in :51 and first five-eighths in l:0o4s. Morsel breezed five-eighths for trainer Mose Lowenstein in 1 :02. The track was fast, but a bit cuppy and other Derby candidates were given long, slow gallops. Broadway Limited and Kilkerry, Derby candidates, and Pansy Walker and Dixie Dreamer, Oaks candidates from the Three Ds Stable, were breezed three-eighths in a set by trainer Dick Vestal. Harned Bros, have added two fillies to their stable, one a bay filly, named Eva Or-mont ; Loya, sister to Hazel Denson, and May Thatcher, and a chestnut filly, named Marian Ormont, by Ormont Welcher, sister to Harold Ormont, which they purchased from Val Campbell of McClainsboro, 111. Jake Lowenstein, Mose Goldblatt and Cecil Howard motored to Lexington to witness the races. Mose Lowenstein, Barney Sexton and J. B. Partridge also motored to the Kentucky Association track to spend the clay viewing the sport. Mr. ana Mrs. Kay Spence and Terry OMal-ley left for Lexington to take in the races. Judge James P. Edwards gave a buffet luncheon to a number of horsemen at is home at Prospect. Mose Lowenstein, Mose Goldblatt, Kay Spence and others were his guests. Terry OMalley brought back the apprentice rider, Clifford Callahan, from Agua Caliente and he joined the stable of his employer, Kay Spence. Terry OMalley left Little Captain, Ray and Umbrian Princess, which are the property of himself and Dave Marian, at Tanforan in charge of W. B. Finnegan, who will rest them up until racing starts at Agua Caliente next winter. OMalley reports the foaling of his mare, Rockiluna, which gave birth to a bay filly by Tracer at Ventura, Calif., on March 18. Dutch Boy, which OMalley purchased last fall from the Audley Farm Stable, will be taken up and put in training for summer racing. This three-year-old wintered at Cannland Farm, near Lexington, after being fired for leg trouble.
