— WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT ♦ Burning Up Takes Measure of Well-Backed Pittsburgher. ♦ Nevada Queen Also Fails Favorite Players at Washington Park — At Sunrise in Front. ♦ HOMEWOOD, 111., May 27.— The Chicago-owned Burning Up turned in a smashing performance at Washington Park this afternoon to win his fifth straight victory. Pitted against a small field of American Derby eligibles in the Windy City Purse, the days feature race, the Bradley castoff, which now races in the silks of Mrs. E. Denemark, led all the way to score by a half length from the favored Pittsburgher, with Sunny Lassie in third place. The winner ran the one mile in 1:38%, the fastest time of the meeting and was given a good ride by jockey Bobbie Jones. The start was effected in the chute with but little delay and Burning Up took the lead at once, with Scotlands Glory and Pittsburgher closest in pursuit. On the back stretch Scotlands Glory was in close quarters next to the rail and jockey Yelton was forced to ease up a trifle, while Pittsburgher moved into second place. Pittsburgher, running in blinkers for the first time, made his move approaching the stretch turn, giving his many backers a ray of hope when he got within a length of the winner. He continued to challenge as they made the stretch turn and jockey Jones, on Burning Up. was forced to make use of his whip, but just as it seemed as if the son of In Me-moriam would catch the Denemark colt, he seemed to tire slightly and Jones, again resorting to hand riding, landed his mount past the finish a winner. Sunny Lassie was going well at the end, while Scotlands Glory bore out a trifle in the stretch and was Soundly beaten. REFUTES SPRINTER THEORY. Burning Up, by his victory today, belied the fact that he is merely a sprinter. He showed an especially game effort over the mile distance and will doubtless attract attention in the better grade three-year old races to be given later in the season. Midsummer weather prevailed this afternoon and the fans, taking advantage of the ideal conditions under which the seven race program was decided, turned out in good numbers. The track was fast. The Missouri-bred Allenfern, which races for J. P. Jones, easily defeated Fox Chase, Suns Son and seven others of the better grade plater two-year-olds, in the opening race, for which the erratic Siberia was favorite. The latter eliminated himself when he ran out while in front at the turn, second going to Fox Chase and the smallest part of the purse to Suns Son. Both the latter two as well as Mendell gave way to the winner during the closing quarter. WILLA TRIUMPHS. Willa, carrying the black and lavender Silks of J. Spencer, showed a game performance in winning the second race, which brought out a field of seven to race one taile. The mare, racing on the inside in he first half mile, disposed of Skirl, one 6f her early rivals, when the far turn was and staying close to the rail on the Jeached, inal turn, took a short lead and won by pver two lengths. She was ridden out by jockey R. West, however, to make her lead Secure. Kincsen, coming gamely under punishment jn the stretch, was second a short distance before Suitor. The winner was the favorite. The unbeaten Nevada Queen made her first appearance in the Middle West in the third race and met with a crushing defeat. After showing the way by a big margin for a half mile, she quit to a walk and finished seventh in an eight-horse field. At Sunrise, from the stable of J. F. Schorr, was the tyinner, while Princess Ivie finished second jind Givanna third. ______________________ __ _— -— — — — — — — Continued on tiventieth page. I WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT! i i Continued from first page. : Nevada Queen, which was a well-backed f f, favorite, was fast to leave the barrier and t opened up a six lengths lead in the first furlong, with Givanna, another westerner, closest in pursuit. At Sunrise, which had suffered some early interference, did not loom as a contender until the final eighth, then, with Nevada Queen quitting fast under I punishment and Givanna also tiring, she gained strongly on the outside to take the lead in the last fifty yards and win by a head. Princess Ivre also finished well and raced gamely to the finish, while Givanna lasted to beat Sans Coin. Nevada Queen, quitting badly, was not punished when it was apparent that she was beaten. The race was over five furlongs and the winner ran the distance in 1:00%. Nevada Queens time I for the quarter was :22% and for the half mile :47%. Finishing with a rush in the center of the track, Rushing, an outsider, got up in time to win the fifth race. Thistle Lad, with the unfashionable apprentice H. Tinker in the saddle, set the pace and led to within twenty yards of the finish. He showed gameness in giving the winner a tussle at the end. Third went to The Southerner. Tanist and Scar- let Brigade came in for the bulk of the play, and the former reached a prominent I position in the stretch only to tire. Jockey D. Meade was astride the winner. — ■ ■ ■■- A
