Plucky Play and Eskimo Stars of Older Division— Gallant Sir, a 4,000 Year ling, Bated Best of Juveniles. ♦ SAN JOSE. Calif., May 27.— The Northway Stable, composed of some of the best racing stock owned by a Californian, left Mira Monte Stock Farm Sunday in two special cars attached to the California Limited, crack Sante Fe passenger train. In the cars are fourteen aristocratic thoroughbreds, eight grooms, three exercise boys, jockey D. Trivett and trainer E. "Woody" Fitzgerald. They are bound for Chicago, and were ex-l pected to unload at Washington Park today. Norman W. Church, owner of the formid- able racing establishment, remained at hi3 home in Los Angeles, but announced he would follow the stable to Chicago late next month to be on hand for the Arlington Park sport in July. Plucky Play and Eskimo, handicap stars, head the older horses in the string. Sun Dot, Flag Time and Lady Va Va, useful platers, go along. The greater strength of the stable, however, lies with the eight two-year-olds, which beyond question are the classiest group of youngsters to leave California bent on an eastern invasion since the days of Lucky Baldwin, Porter Ashe and other famous horsemen of a generation ago. Gallant Sir, a 4,000 yearling by Sir Gal-lahad III. — Sunspot, is a juvenile of great promise. Gentle as a kitten, this big well-rounded fellow has done everything asked of him on the Mira Monte training track and requires a strong hand to prevent him from going faster than his trainer so far has allowed. He has been named for all the important stakes at Arlington Park, as have several of the other two-year-olds. Whizz James, by St. James — Whizz Bang, cost Mr. Church 2,500 as a yearling. The "picture horse" of the stable, in conformation he resembles Jamestown, also by St. James. Arha Wanna, a comely filly and the pet of the grooms, is the first racer ever bred by Mr. Church. She is by Peter Pan from Yashmack, a Broomstick mare, he maintains in Kentucky. Hindu Jim, a colt by Jim Gaffney — Hindu Dress; Golden State, a colt by Chatterton — Hurry Long; Chatter On, a colt by Chatterton — Blue Deep, and three fillies, La Wanda, by Ambassador IV. — Light Brigade, Monacamp, by Campfire — Monachina, and Chatter Queen, by Chatterton — Star Spangle, complete the band. "This is by far the strongest stable I have ever sent from California," Mr. Church said. "The stable was quite successful at Chicago last summer, but with anything like an even break in racing luck it should do much better this year. I shall be vastly disappointed if some of the two-year-olds fail to make their presence felt in the juvenile stakes." Bert John was left in charge of Mira Monte, where he will shape up a number of second string racers for the summer meetings in the West. Just when Toro, the horse bought from E. B. McLean last year to head the Church nursery, now in the making, will be brought to California from Kentucky, where now are nearly a score brood mares owned by the sportsman, has not yet been decided. HOMEWOOD, 111., May 27.— There was an important addition to the numerous fashionable stables at Washington Park when trainer E. F. Fitzgerald unloaded Norman W. Churchs Northway Stable late Tuesday. The stable of fourteen came from the Church ranch at San Jose, Calif., and all unloaded from the long trip in satisfactory condition. The stable will campaign through the entire Chicago season. In addition to the elder Plucky Play, Eskimo, Sundot, Flag Time and Lady Vava, the stable embraces eight royally bred and well regarded two-year-olds as follows: Chatter On, b. g, by Chatterton — Blue Deep; Golden State, ch. c, by Chatterton — Hurry Long; Chatter Queen, b. f, by Chatterton — Star Spangle; Gallant Sir, b. c, by Sir Gallahad III. — Sun Spot; Whizz James, b. c, by St. James — Whizz Bang; Hindus Jim, b. g, by Jim Gaffney — Hindu Dress; Arha Wanna, b. by Peter Pan — Yashmak, and La Wanda, b. f, by Ambassador II. — Light Brig.
