Y., May 27.— While Jamestown gave convincing proof of his readiness for the mile of the Withers in the Tournament Handicap at Belmont Park yesterday, some of the other candidates for the famous old mile had created something of a sensation during the work hours. One of the most sensational moves was that of Morton L. Schwartz Clock Tower, which will be a sure starter. He reeled off five furlongs easily in :59, while some of the watches made the move faster. Surf Board covered a mile in 1:38%, and his stablemate St. Brideaux went over the same distance handily in 1:41%. St. Brideaux went on out to the mile and a furlong in 1:55, and the move was an easy one. Clock Tower, in his fast move went the first quarter in :22%, the half in :46%, and was in hand to finish out the five furlongs in :59. The Surf Board fractions were 13 :24%, :36%, :48%, 1:00%, 1:13%. 1:26, 1:38% It was a move to indicate that he was in the running of the Kentucky Derby. _
