K. Bry-sons Fair Beth took the measure of the best field at Bainbridge Park this afternoon in winning the Highland Park Purse, run as the fifth race. Princess Zelda and By Product divided the minor awards, with Lincoln Plaut finishing a bang up fourth, gaining fast in the stretch. The mile and seventy yards was run in 1:43%, a very creditable effort. Meclona set the pace until well around the far turn, with Princess Zelda and By Product closely following. At this point Fair Beth began to move up next to the inner rail. Turning for home, Princess Zelda and By Product drew clear, while Meclona dropped out of contention. A furlong out Fair Beth overhauled the leaders and drew away into an easy lead in the last sixteenth. In the final drive Princess Zelda saved second by the shortest of margins. Once more the sport was staged under favorable conditions, and the attendance was up to the standard for a mid-week day. The racing was spirited, although a majority of the winners scored by comfortable margins. Bright Comet and Bubola staged a stretch duel for the leadership in the last quarter of the fourth race. Bubola was fortunate in having the inside position and gained the verdict by a head in a hard drive. Molerito raced into third place handily in the stretch. Jack Berry and Sweep-Net both suffered interference going to the first turn, which ruined their chances, but both gained much ground. Displaying fine speed throughout, Ninotte was never threatened during the running of Continued on twenty-first page. ! ■ 1 1 • • | ■ » ■ I • ■ • ! i ■ • 1 - • I I • I » l I I ; BRYSON COLORS IN FRONT Continued from first page. the opening race. Golden Cloud raced in closest pursuit of the winner to the stretch, but during the run home Hippias outstayed him for second place. Dumpy was the best backed, but he was never a serious factor. A real surprise developed when Hard Rock led by a comfortable margin throughout the second race and won rather handily. He was among those least fancied and grouped in the field. Shift made his challenge racing up on the outside entering the stretch, while Glad Effort gained fast next to the inner rail. Shift proved the gamer in the final drive for second. Saddle Skirts began slowly and raced much below expectations. Stuart Polks Fred Almy sprinted away into an easy lead after the first quarter of the third race, and thereafter led by a safe margin. Epidemic raced past the others easily in the stretch to finish a creditable second, many lengths in advance of Rector, which secured the minor award. Fred Almy was a pronounced choice, and his victory was popular. A rather serious accident came with the running of this race. Near the stretch turn Kranz Baby, when racing in a contending position, stumbled and fell. Quetor, Bunt- ing Lad and Hoops fell over her, and when the dust cleared away three riders lay pros-I trate on the track. Jockey OMalley, who had the mount on Kranz Baby, was the only one of the quartet to escape injury and walked back to the jockeys quarters. Jockey C. Callahan, who rode Hoops, W. Day, on Bunting Lad, and J. Scurlock, were not so fortunate. Callahan suffered some broken ribs and internal injviries which it is feared may prove serious. He was rushed to a Cleveland hospital. W. Day was severely cut about the head and was taken to St. Alexis Hospital for further examination. Scurlock gained consciousness on reaching the hospital on the track. He suffered a twisted ligament and bruises which will keep him out of the sad- die for some time. Attending physicians report Callahans injuries most serious of all.
