TWENTY GRANDS WORKOUT Greentree Colt Gallops Mile and a Half in Mud at Belmont in 2:36%. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 10.— Whether the going is fast or muddy Saturday will make little difference to the chief contenders for the three-year-old championship, Twenty Grand and Jamestown, in their meeting in the sixty-third renewal of the 5,000 Belmont Stakes. Twenty Grand proved beyond a doubt this morning that he can negotiate any sort of going when he covered the Belmont distance of one mile and a half in 2:36%, galloping handily for the entire distance. The Greentree Stables great colt was sent out for his final trial over a track that was ankle deep in mud and covered from rail to rail with several inches of water from the heavy rain that was still falling. The going was the worst of the meeting. St. Brideaux was sent out as a work horse, but was of little use to his famous stable-mate in that role. The pair began from the stewards stand, with Marshall Lilley astride Twenty Grand and having a tight hold on his mount. St. Brideaux managed to keep step with the Greentree crack in the run around the first turn. The pair negotiated the first furlong in :12% and were caught at the quarter mile in :25. Twenty Grand, still under restraint, began edging away from St. Brideaux after half a mile had been covered. The watches showed :49 at that point. At five furlongs Twenty Grand, leading his stablemate by two lengths, was timed in 1:01%, with the boy on St. Brideaux letting his mount step right along. Twenty Grand was caught in 1:13% at six furlongs, still under a tight hold. The watches showed 1:40 at the mile, with St. Brideaux four lengths in the rear. Twenty Grand covered the next furlong in :13%, being timed in 1:53%. He covered the next furlong in :13%, or 2:07 for the mile and a quarter. Lilley took a tighter hold at that point, and the watches showed 2:21 for a mile and three furlongs. Twenty Grand was being eased up to round out the full distance of one mile and a half in 2:36%.
