M. Woolfs improved gelding, scored his third consecutive victory when he finished in front of a small field in the Cottage Grove, a claiming race that occupied headline position on this afternoons program at Washington Park. Well rated by jockey C. p. Allen in the early running, he moved i ahead of Maya entering the stretch and finished - one length in advance of the Davison i colorbearer. Galahad was third, with Jem t and Islam unplaced. The race was at one I mile, and all were entered to be claimed for ,500. From a good start, Maya went to the front t with Dark Sea close up and that pair raced down the back stretch, far in advance of the s Others, with Maya holding a two-length advantage. - Dark Sea was under wraps and I It was not until the far turn had been passed that he was sent after the leader. WINS BY A LENGTH. Coming fast when released from restraint, , the Woolf gelding caught Maya as they J rounded the final bend, and when tapped 1 with the whip by his pilot got to the front t and won by a length. Maya was game, however, - and continued to race in gallant style, , but Dark Sea was clearly the best, and drew / away in the last twenty yards. Galahad i made up some ground, but not enough to threaten the leaders. . Although it was quite warm today, the e weather was not oppressive, and the good i sized crowd witnessed the sport in comfort. ;. The track was greatly improved over yesterday, - and was termed good, but overcast t skies presaged more rain. Lady Teddy, a daughter of Sir Galahad I III. — Embassy, which was facing the barrier r for the first time, scored an easy win in i the opening race. Hustled into a handy y lead by jockey Earl Pool soon after the start, she was never in trouble and was in i hand at the finish. Sabina H. earned second i money after racing closest to the leader most of the way, while Rara Avis was s third. Lady Teddy raced in the colors of f the Three Ds Stock Farm Stable, and, despite •- the fact that it was her first trip to o the post, tales of her prowess were noised about before the race, and she was well II backed. Sally Irene was a lukewarm favorite but could do no better than finish a fourth. PANCHIO SCORES. Panchio, one time Three Ds Stock Farm n stake horse, which has been relegated to the e claiming ranks, proved a trifle too good for r the big band that started in the second ■ race and scored a victory. Coming gamely y on the outside in the stretch after racing S close up. he outgamed one of the old horses, Copperfield, in a driving finish. Mardie took k third, while Bagsmasher, the favorite, was s in close quarters early and finished fourth. l- Panchio, making his first start since last * season, performed in the colors of the Chicago *" sportsman, E. Denemark, and was ridden •" by jockey R. Jones. Grey Kitty, making her second start of the e was the medium of a plunge in the e fear, hird race and, showing improvement over r her last performance, led most of the way y to register an easy victory. She was backed d into favoritism, and jockey James, getting g her clear of the others after going a quarter, had her well in front thereafter. Two outsiders. The Okah and Belen, finished - second and third respectively, with Belen closing fast on the outside. Etcetera was another confidently backed by his connections that won with ease. Quoted at long odds in the early readings, ;- • he was favored going to the post and gave ■ his supporters little cause for anxiety. He rushed into the lead on the outside in the early stages and held his opponents safe throughout. By Wire, an outsider, raced J close up throughout and held second place e . safe from Allenfern. The latter was hard ridden all the way and tired near the end. . j Jockey McCoy was astride Etcetera, which races for J. F. Schorr. Princess Doreen, one of the greatest race e marcs in the history of the turf, and a a favorite with Chicago racegoers, will be ,e represented today in the third race at Washington j Park by her first offspring, the filly v Mary Borah, by High Cloud.
