ACTIVE AT LATONIA COURSE Large Force of Men at Work Putting Finishing Touches on Covington Track. LATONIA Ky., June 22.— With only five days remaining before the opening of the thirty-one day meeting Saturday, the Latonia course was the scene of much activity this morning. In addition to numerous workouts, the management had a large force of men putting finishing touches on the beautiful plant, and it will be ready for the opening, which, from all indications, will attract the largest crowd since the third running of the International Stakes, which was won by Sarazen, when he defeated the French champion Epinard. There were more than thirty horses to be schooled from the Bahr starting machine, and William Hamiltons assistants were busy until near noontime. Arrivals from Churchill Downs, Washington Park, Lincoln Fields, Douglas Park, Bainbridge Park and Lexington swelled the horse colony to more than the 600 mark, and that many more have requested stall reservations from the Chicago district. During the course of the long meeting there are six stakes" down for decision. The piece de resistance is the Latonia Derby, with its 5,000 added value, and which is expected to gross more than 0,000. The following Saturday the Independence Handicap, with its 0,000 added value, and expected to draw such stars as Gallant Knight, Playtime, Royal Julian, Bargello, Jimmy Moran and other cracks, will be decided. Following the mile and three-sixteenths Independence Handicap is the Cincinnati Trophy, the Enquirer Handicap, the Clip-setta Stakes, and the final day of the meeting will be featured by the thirty-fifth renewal of the Latonia Oaks. With more than 500 horses named for the six stakes, large fields, which will include the pick of the young and older divisions are expected to engage during the coming meeting. The new rule which allows overnight handicaps to go in the event three or more start, appears to have been the incentive in bringing the best of the handicap horses to Latonia,
