HALLIARD IN GOOD WORKOUT Latonia Derby Candidate Goes Seven-Eighths in 1:30 — Playtime Again Shows Fine Speed. LATONIA, Ky., June 22.— Halliard, the son of Bunting and Pastoral, which E. P. Applegate purchased in the dispersal sale of former senator Johnson N. Camden, and which was named by Mr. Camden for the forty-ninth running of the Latonia Derby, the first of the six stakes to be decided during the thirty-one days of racing, beginning here Saturday, was called on for a seven-furlongs work as one of his final preparations for the gruelling one mile and a half race this morning. Working with Nisia another Camden castoff, the colt ran the distance in 1:30 in handy fashion. After a mile gallop the pair began from the seven-eighth3 post and ran the quarter in :24%, the half in :50%, and three-quarters in 1:17%. Hal Pryce Headleys Jay Walker, a recent arrival from Headleys Beaumont Farm, and another Derby eligible, went a handy three-quarters in 1:16. He was accompanied by Tap Dance, which was timed the distance in 1:15. The Southland Stables Playtime was sent five-eighths by trainer John Daniels. The My Play colt, an eligible for the Independence and Enquirer Handicaps, ran the distance in 1:00%. He was attended by Disturb. Playtime ran the quarter in :23, three-eighths in :35% and the half in :48%. Hasta Luego, which W. D Covington named for the Clipsetta Stakes, breezed three-eighths in :39%, while Mose Gold-blatts K. Russell, which is an eligible for the Cincinnati Trophy, breezed the same distance in :38%. Furst and Bauers Castle Cliff was sent a handy five furlongs in 1:06. The son of Poly-melian, which was named for the Trophy, was accompanied by Mary Gage. Abe Fuerst, a Cincinnati Trophy eligible from the same barn, breezed three furlongs in :38. Our Fancy and Grand Champion, both of which J. B. Respess nominated for the Cincinnati Trophy, were opened up three-eighths in :38%. They went together all the way. Grand Union and St. Nazaire, two other Trophy eligibles from the Respess barn, were timed the same distance in :37. The Southland Stables Miss Byrd, a Clipsetta nominee, ran three-eighths in :36%, after reeling off the first quarter in :23%. while Bachelor Hal, which will sport the Southland Stable silks in the Trophy, ran an even three-eighths in :36.
