1931 STAKE WINNING JOCKEYS .Riders Who Carried Off One or : More of the Feature Races of Last Year. The list of jockeys who in 1931 won stakes grossing more than 0,000 but less than 0,000, includes the names of such well known riders as E. Ambrose, W. Kelsay, F. Munden, L. Schaefer, R. Fischer, E. Barnes, K. Russell and S. Hebert. G. Mann ranks at the head of this column, having won several stakes on the Canada tracks to the value of 9,510, nearly half of which was realized through his Kings Plate victory at Woodbine Park. He rode Froth Blower in this event and took down ,100. W. Kern won the bulk of his 9,475. with Delivered in the Queen City Handicap at Latonia, this having been worth 4,350. Kern also won the George Washington Han-: dicap at Agua Caliente with Caruso. F. Munden also passed the nineteen thousand mark. He won the United States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga with Morfair, and was successful in several smaller stakes on New York tracks. W. Kelsays most successful stake engagement was in the Youthful, at Jamaica, which he won with Universe. He rode Mokatam, winner of the Excelsior Handicap at Jamaica, and figured in several others of less value. C. Turk was one of the successful riders on the Tanforan and Agua Caliente tracks, his San Francisco Handicap, with Seths Hope, being his best. The veteran Ambrose was a star of the Syracuse meeting. He won the first Governors Handicap there with Reveille Boy. He was also successful early in the year at Miami, and his stake victories in all brought in 6,485. J. Gianelloni won only one stake, but it was a good one, the Dixie Handicap, at Pimlico. Paul Bunyan was his mount, and the victory was worth 5,425. W. Nertneys headliner was the Baltimore ,Handicap, worth ,080, but he more than doubled this in other events. R. Finnerty won the New Years Handicap at New Orleans with Playtime, and the Illinois Oaks, at Washington Park, with Alyssum. Li. Schaefer won the Great Lakes Handicap with Battleship, R. Fischer the Latonia Oaks with Betty Derr, R. Leischman the Laurel Stakes with Flagstone. This was Leischmans second straight in this event, having won it in 1930 with Conclave. M. Rose won the Cincinnati Trophy with Cold Check, H. Schutte, the Grainger Memorial with Gallant Knight, J. McCoy the Arlington Inaugural with Silverdale. This horse repeated in the Arlington Inaugural. J. Renick scored an important victory with On Post in the Walden Handicap at Pimlico, this stake being worth 1,425. E. Barnes won the Demoiselle Stakes at Empire City with Straightlace. K. Russell won the Clark Handicap with Bargello. S. Hebert won the Paumonok Handicap with Protractor.
