WOODARD FREQUENT VISITOR Engages Clem Pierce to Train His Horses This Year Lloyd Gev-ing at Louisville. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 16. Dr. E. L. Woodard is a frequent visitor at the Downs now since he has shipped his thoroughbreds in from his home and farm on the River Road to the local course. He has engaged Clem Pierce to train his horses this season. Jolly Fun, a three-year-old black filly by Black Toney Society, by Ballot, which was trained by Roscoe Goose for Dr. Woodard last year, is the only older horse in the stable. Pierre Pan is the name of his two-year-old bay colt, by Peter Pan Coventry Girl, by Wrack, and Stinger is the name of the chestnut colt, by Pennant Wasp, by Sweep. These youngsters were broken to saddle during the summer by John Jones at Douglas Park and are taking to early training lessons like veterans. Dr. Woodard bred this trio of thoroughbreds, owning their dams, and he has two yearlings at his farm, the son of Peter Pan Wasp, being a chestnut, while the one by Black Toney Coventry Girl is a brown colt. Coventry Girl is in foal to Blue Larkspur. Kirby Ramsey, who was restored to good standing on the turf last fall, is managing the stable of Mrs. J. A. Carney, who has a two-year-old filly named Beauty Beach, a chestnut in color, by Bubbling Over-Beach Beauty and a chestnut colt, by Ballot Continued on second page. Sells, who developed the great Dick Welles, has in training at the Downs the two-year-olds Boots Melody, a bay filly, by Boot to Boot Moorland Melody, and Woody Simon, by Tall Timber Simons Kiss, which are the property of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Geier. Jockey Lloyd Geving has joined the riding talent at Louisville, having reached here from New Orleans on Sunday. He went to work for E. H. Von Roenn, who has a small string of horses in training at the Downs. Claude Hunt has added three more horses to his list of charges at the Downs, all being three-year-olds. One is Atawanda, turned over to him by K. Spence, and another is Bunt, owned by W. F. Knebelkamp. Judge James P. Edwards has sent Hunt a horse named Last Act, to train for him, which did not race last year. John Jones is preparing Camp Boss, Six Bits, Zone, Grantor, Surepop and a two-year-old chestnut colt, by Messenger, for John Marsch, Chicago turfman, at Douglas Park. These horses were sent to Jones from Lexington, where they were turned out during the fall and winter months. They will be turned over to trainer Phil Reuter, of the Marsch stable, when he returns North from the New Orleans tracks.
