WALLACE TURF ENTHUSIAST Death Severe Loss to England Famous Author and Playwright Devotee of Sport. England lost another prominent turf enthusiast by the death of the famous novelist and playwright, Edgar Wallace. For ten years the late sportsman took an active part in English racing as the owner of many race horses. Although his claret and white check, green cap, silks were never carried to victory in any of the classics or more important stakes, they were often seen in the van. Lately the horses he had in training were raced in his wifes name and carried his claret and white stripes, but he took the same interest in the stable, which was in the care of the Irish trainer, John Beary, at Tilshead, Wiltshire. Only recently the Irish jockey, Michael Beary, who was associated with most of the deceased sportsmans turf victories in late years, was his guest for two weeks at his Beverly Hills home, California. During that visit Edgar Wallace made tentative plans with the Irish horseman for his two-year-old filly, by Abbots Trace Warrior Star, by Happy Warrior, in training at Tilshead and, if showing well in her early racing this season in England, to be sent to this country in the summer to try conclusions in the Futurity Stakes at the Belmont Park fall meeting. For the past two or three years the deceased sportsman had been acquiring a select coterie of choicely bred mares as the nucleus of a thoroughbred stock farm. Like all true followers of the turf, he was anxious to have his silks carried by horses bred by himself. Mr. Wallace was an able writer on racing, a sport he loved, and for a number of years presided over the annual luncheon given by the English press to the most famous owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys of the Empire the Monday preceding the Derby. He had his last view of the sport of kings at Agua Caliente on January 16, when he accompanied the veteran English horseman, Steve Donoghue, and the Irish jockey, Michael Beary, across the border, to be the guest of the Agua Caliente Jockey Club.
