DERBY TRAINERS PLEASED Each , Confident That His Representative Is in Prime Condition for Big Race. LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 5— With all the * bitter disappointments that have come in various Derby camps with Universe the 1 latest to go amiss, other trainers expressed themselves as thoroughly satisfied with the 1 progress of their eligibles. James W. Healy characterized the final , trials of Stepenfetchit and Over Time, the • Mrs. John Hay Whitney pair, Wednesday morning as "magnificent." . This was only a mile and a furlong in 1:55, but it was exactly what was required by Healy, and both went along smoothly and evenly. This morning they were out in galloping exercises, and Healy said he knew both were fit and ready to run a mile and a quarter. Max Hirsch is just as pleased with Tick On, and the son of On Watch will surely go to the post favorite Saturday. The trainers generally agree that Tick On is the colt that must be beaten, but they have high hopes of having the one that will turn the trick. "Dick" Thompson pronounces the Bradley pair, Burgoo King and Brother Joe, ready, and in discussing his colts said that, while Brother Joe was the master of Burgoo King in muddy going, the son of Bubbling Over was a better colt over firm footing. This morning Brother Joe showed none of the soreness that he exhibited after his Wednesday trial, and with two such candidates the master of Idle Hour Farm is equipped to meet any track condition. H. C. Riddle, last of the invaders from New York, said that John J. Robinsons Lucky Tom was as fit as hands could make him and ready for the big race when he was unloaded from the cars. He was of the opinion that some of the other trainers would like another week of preparation. Frank Bray has high hopes for Brandon . Mint, but explained that the son of Stimulus was such a loafer in his work that one not familiar with the colt would ridicule the idea of his having even a remote chance in the Derby. He promises that Brandon Mint will give a good account of himself, and promises that he will be running when some of the others are stopping. Clarence Buxton shares the confidence of the others, and with Universe definitely out of the way, he considers his chance with J. H. Louchheims Economic just a bit better. Economic ran a smashingly good race behind Universe in the Wood Memorial, and Buxton promises the son of Infinite will run a better race Saturday. About the only Kentucky hope now is centered in the Bradley pair, for the others, since the unfortunate injury to Burning Blaze, have not shown enough to be seri-- ously considered. Incidentally George Collins has announced that he will send Thistle Ace after the big prize. This colt has not been considered before, but with the thinning out of the field, Collins has an idea that his colt would have a royal chance. *
