1 LITTLE LADS EASY VICTORY * Wins Montauk Claiming Stakes at Jamaica Under Restraint. « Nuhat Finishes Second, With John Davenport Third— Small Fields in Majority of Races. • NEW YORK, N. Y., May 5.— The Montauk Claiming Stakes, for two-year-olds, over five furlongs, witnessed another triumph for the J. J. Robinson stable when Little Lad, ridden by Richards, was an easy victor over Mrs. J. A. Coburns Nuhat, while in third place was J. P. Atkins John Davenport. W. Frank Smiths Chiltenny finished fourth. Five withdrawals from the overnight list reduced the field to six starters, of which Little Lad was a pronounced choice. He left no doubt as to his superiority over those he was asked to meet, and moving into command in the final furlong, was under restraint at the end. The Montauk Stakes was the feature offering of the program, and carried an added value of ,000, netting the winner ,750. A good sized crowd was on hand for the days program, and clear weather prevailed. The track was fast. The start in the Montauk Stakes was a good one. and Nuhat, one that was campaigned at Agua Caliente, moved into command. Little Lad raced along after her, while Chiltenny was in third piace leading John Davenport, with Dug In and Cresta Run far back. On the far turn Little Lad moved up fast on the outside, and swinging for home, raced to the outside of the leader. In the stretch Little Lad assumed command and drew away with ease, and in the final sixteenth was under restraint. John Davenport made a determined effort in the stretch, but when placed under pressure at the furlong post, ducked towards the inside, losing ground. Chiltenny, which was close up in the early stages, lasted long enough to be a fourth before the fast-finishing Dug In. A rattling finish resulted in the opening six furlongs dash when Blue Blitzen, ridden by J. Mann, outlasted Reproof, ridden by Knapp, with Chipper a head back in third place. The finish was in doubt until the judges awarded the verdict to Blue Blitzen. He was in close quarters and shuffled back nearing the turn, but Mann bide;: his time, and when an opening developed on the inside at the stretch turn, he shot his mount through and he responded courageously to assume command. Knapp, on the other hand, was forced to come to the outside, and Reproof finished gamely, but just failed to get up. Chipper, another that was forced to work her v/ay up on the outside, closed fastest of all at the end. Bonavis caused some excitement when he ran away a quarter of a mile as the field paraded to the starting point. Deferred, ridden by H. Mills, was an easy winner of the second race. Her score was an easy one over Risk, with Lillie D. third over two others. Light Breeze and Capricious completed the field, and the latter was eliminated when he propped at the start. Deferred, which was made the medium of a stout backing, moved into command at once. She outran her rivals from the start, and when Steffen called upon Risk she failed to make up much ground on the inside but had no trouble in leading home Lillie D. The latter bore out slightly in the stretch run but was very tired at the end. «
