DONALD LAD, hurried into a forward position, responded to strong urging in the stretch and, closing fast, wore down the leaders near the end. STAMBUL, a factor from the start, raced close to BALD CREST and, wearing down the latter in the final eighth, could not withstand the winner. BALD CREST, unruly at the post, showed good early speed, but tired midway of the stretch. JOE MACAW worked his way up on the inside and finished gamely. DEEPIE tired after half a mile. SINNER could not menace the leaders. GALLIC raced wide all the way. DARK WAR raced poorly. KIRKLAND POST, following close to TOE DANCE from the start, came with excellent speed for the final drive and, wearing down the pacemaker, drew clear under urging. TOE DANCE, hard urged to take command, was rated in front, then tired. CHARLIE WHITTIER worked his way up gradually and closed gamely. COLLARVICTORIA closed a big gap. STEP OFF was held safe. SANTA CREST quit after going five eighths. The others were outrun. CUCHULAIN, close to MEXICO in the early stages, wore down the latter entering the stretch and, hard ridden, lasted to withstand PENNATE. The latter, outrun for five eighths, went to the outside near th« stretch and, closing fast, would have won in a few more strides. GUILDER came through on the inside of the pacemakers near the end and fought it out gamely. MEXICO, hard ridden to hold early command, tired in the closing eighth. PRINCETON showed a good performance. COMMON could not reach the leaders. BIG BLOW had a rough race, as did BUSHMAN. BANDERLOG, restrained behind the early pace, responded to vigorous pressure in the closing half mile, closed fast and Battista outrode Magner in the drive. LOUIS MERRYMAN, rated close to the leaders and kept on the outside, was placed to punishment when taking command on the stretch turn and was weakly ridden when forced to a hard drive in the closing sixteenth. CHOSEN PAL lost ground entering the stretch, but held on well. HAPPEN tired after seven eighths. WARD IN CHANCERY was never a factor. BLUE ARAB quit. FRIENDLY, WAYS raced well at times. GOLD MINT was badly blocked and forced back on the first turn. STAR quit* as did POISON IVY.
