NINE FOR BELMONT STAKES Probable Field for Notable Old Turf Fixture Includes Flag Pole, Latest Sensation. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 2— With only another day intervening before the running of the famous old Belmont Stakes, the mile and a half special of the Westchester Rac- I ing Association, for its big Saturday program, there is still the promise that at least nine of the eligibles will be seen under silks. These have been coming up to the running satisfactorily in trials and the two that have attracted the most recent attention are the Brookmeade Stables Flag Pole and Morton L. Schwartz Gusto. When Flag Pole worked a mile and a half in 2:31% Wednesday morning he created a real sensation, and as a final for the big prize it was remarkable. Gustos final was also sensational, when he finished out a mile and a half in 2:33 and he was running at the end in a way that showed a readiness for the long gallop. Like Flag Pole, this fellow is also a son of American Flag. Osculator, the W. R. Coe hope for the Belmont, displayed great speed this morning when Bennett Creech sent him along for a gallop of five furlongs. The son of Pompey was permitted to move along in his own fashion and he covered the distance in :58%, with something to spare, despite the terrific speed. He went to the first quarter post in :22%, the half in :46% and the five furlongs in :58%. Sansarica, from the Howe Stable, was another that was brought out, but all that was required of him was a mile in 1:41, accomplished in hand. It still appears that the field will probably be made up of Flag Pole, Faireno, Gusto, Osculator, Villon, Sansarica, Sun-melus, Mad Pursuit and Jimmy Sutro. It is hardly expected that any will be added to this list and it seems moderately certain that, with favorable weather and track conditions, all of these will go to the post. They have been training nicely for the big prize.
