PLAYTIME IN FAST GALLOP Works a Mile in Most Impressive Style, Covering Distance in 1 :40 Royal Julian Is Improving. LATONIA, Ky., June 18. In view of the threatening weather, trainers took advantage of the good track that prevailed at Latonia to send their charges along at a fast clip. It was work day for a majority of the horses and the track was the scene of the most activity since the start of the training season. The best work of the morning was turned in by Southland Stables Playtime, which is an eligible for the three handicaps to be decided during the meeting. The son of My Play, which has the one mile and one furlong of the Independence Handicap as his first objective, went a mile in 1:40, with trainer Daniels waving the rider down in the last furlong. Commencing at the three-quarters and circling the track, Playtime covered the quarter in :24, half in :48 and three-quarters in 1:13. He covered the seven furlongs in 1:26. At this stage, Daniels started motioning the boy to take a firmer hold. Disregarding the signals, the horse was driving at the end, but came out of the trial in good style and showing no ill effects from it. Pass Christian, a Cincinnati Trophy eligible from the same stable went five-eighths in 1:02, driving. He reeled off the quarter in :23, three-eighths in :35 and the half-mile in :49. Wise Mona, from the same, stable and a Clipsetta eligible, went five-eighths in 1:03, handily. S. S. Combs Nituma had her first important work since arriving here. She breezed five-eighths in 1:03. Royal Julian, Latonia Cup winner, was sent his first three-quarters since returning to training. He was timed the distance in 1:20, breezing. Albert Dunne unloaded Up Above and Klair, which will race in his interest. In the same van that came from Churchill Downs were two, the property of H. Van Ree.
