BEST SALE OF THE SEASON McDowell and Chinn Yearlings Bring Total of 1,325 for 54 Head. The Porter Starella Colt, Star of Auction, Going to Mrs. T. J. Lewis for 10,000 Bidding Brisk. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y Aug. 20. Phil T. Chinn and Maj. T. C. McDowell conducted one of the most successful yearling ales of the season last night at the Fasig-Tipton paddocks. Fifty-four offerings in all went under the hammer for a total of 1,-825, which is an average of almost ,506, an excellent showing for such a number. The top price "was reached in the Chinn consignment when Mrs. T. J. Lewis successfully bid 0,000 for a chestnut son of The Porter and Starella and, accordingly, a brother to Greenock, which raced so successfully for Edward B. McLean. The star of the Maxwell lot and second highest price of the sale was a bay son-of Mad Hatter and Distinction, a daughter of The Manager. He went to J. P. Smith, who was probably bidding for G. H. Bostwick,.for ,200. "William Ziegler, Jr., paid ,000 for a chestnut son of Man o War and Zohra, an imported daughter of Sardanapale. These were the high spots of a thoroughly successful auction.
