FINAL WEEK AT CRETE Brown Wisdom Runs Fast Three-Quarters in Feature. Defeats Speedy Little America and Cathop in Kappmeyer Purse Gyro Graduates in Second. CRETE, 111., Oct. 3. Brown Wisdom captured the victors glory and gold in the feature race as the meeting at the local Lincoln Fields track swung into the final wek today. Brown Wisdom hooked up with Little America, Cathop, Butter Beans, Betty Derr, Miss Marr and Sazerac over the three-quarters distance in the Kappmeyer Purse, and it .was a contest worthy of a critical audience. Charging from behind a fast pace set by the speedy Little America, the successful veteran brought the Reichert Brothers colors under the wire a length before Little America, which in turn took second by a length over Cathop. Brown Wisdom covered the distance in 1:11, one of the fastest performances of the meeting and within four-fifths of a second of the track record established by himself back in 1929. Trying for her eleventh victory of the year, Little America had to shoulder 115 pounds, equal weight with the winner, and the bur-jden was too much for her. Away swiftly, slie proceeded to make things miserable for har rivals and, after racing Betty Derr into submission, came on to the final furlong a length and one-half before the eventual winner. Entering the last eighth Landolt decided to take no chances with the winner and, passing up an opening to drive him through on the inside of the leader, swung him to the outside of the speedy four-year-oid filly. DRAWS AWAY RAPIDLY. When straightened out Brown Wisdom came on fast and, after wearing down Little America, rapidly drew away as Cathop, Which "W. Moran directed to the inside after losing ground for five-eighths, gained fast, but not swiftly enough to overtake Little America. The effort turned in by -Butter Beans, which saved fourth money, was a good one, while Betty Derr and Miss Marr tired when the real test was on. The good sport that inaugurated the concluding week of major track racing in the .Chicago area this season was witnessed by a good-sized crowd that included a number of visitors attracted here by the worlds series. The players made Cathop favorite in the feature, and his defeat marked the lourth in five races for the choices. Gunfire, ridden by O. Laidley and well supported, experienced no trouble outsprint-ing ten others from among the cheaper older platers over the three-quarters distance in the opening race. Away fast and quick to settle into his best stride, the winner made every post a winning one and at the end led Infinity, which ruled choice, by four lengths. Blue John saved third from Our Grief. On the stretch turn the winner rapidly increased his advantage and, continuing well, not only retained command but won with something left. In the late stages Infinity, which was aided by a big saving of ground, tired but proved just a trifle too good for Blue John, which had to race wide, and held on fairly well. DECISIVE VICTORY. C. V. Whitneys Gyro graduated from the maiden class with a decisive victory over eleven other juvenile non-winners brought together under the lower claiming scale and over three-quarters in the second race. This also resulted in the defeat of the favorite when Popo went down. Hi failed to account for any of the monetary positions, second going to Salut dAmour, while Avail filled third and Kentucky Moon drove home in the .van of the others. After being badly jostled about during the early racing the winner saved ground in his winning charge entering the stretch and, after coming outside Avail and Salut dAmour, came on to win by two lengths. For a time it appeared that Salut dAmour would make a runaway of it, but the victors belated charge overwhelmed him and, while going down by two lengths, saved second by a like margin. Due to repeated crowding Popo had little chance to show to advantage in the early stages and stumbling in the stretch just about clinched his downfall. The mile third race, for three-year-olds, Was productive of one of the more thrilling finishes when the three leaders drove to the wire heads apart. Northern Sir, ridden by J. Flynn, was the winner, with Lord Continued on twenty-second page. FINAL WEEK AT CRETE Continued from first page. Dean second and Blow Fly, the favorite, third. After making the pace from the start, Lord Dean tired in the final drive but barely fell short in a game attempt to stagger to the finish the winner, Northern Sir heading him a few strides out. Blow Fly and Lazy Mary, which was fourth to finish, closed much ground after trailing far back to the stretch. That Roscoe Goose has developed for Polk Laffoon and Harry C. Yeiser one of the outstanding two-year-olds in Shepherd Boy, was W demonstrated when the speedy son of Hil-dur defeated Ballygran, Spicson and others in the Niles Center Purse. The winner had none the best of the luck and finishing with fine speed and determination, wore down Ballygran in time to win by a neck in the fast time of 1:12. Spicson, second to last in the field of nine on the stretch turn, made up a world of ground to finish within a length of Ballygran and well in the van of Bright Chestnut and the others. The winner, favorite in the betting, was ridden by G. Elston and the victory marked his fourth in seven starts. Colonial Belle scored over Jaz Age, Louie Dear and five others in the sixth race, and the running found her much the best, with the result that she won decisively. Tiring after giving way to the winner in the last eighth, Jaz Age had little to spare in accounting for second over Louie Dear, which held on well. Hot Shot quit badly after being indulged with the early pacemaking, and Hamilton could not get to the leaders.
