. 1 THISTLE DOWN TURF NOTES I 4 A light rain, which fell Sunday night and Monday, considerably benefited the infield greensward, as well as the track proper. It was just heavy enough to pack the oval and was most welcome, according to track superintendent J. O. Brown. More than 600 horses are now quartered either on the grounds or at North Randall and, with the additional shipments arriving, there will be ample horses to take care of the race program. P. O. Anderson unloaded three horses Monday morning from Latonia, headed by Le Flore. E. Babcock was another who unloaded a shipment, of three at the Thistle Down course. Word was received from Windsor that H. G. Bedwell would ship his string of eighteen heacl here to arrive Thursday, with the following coming from other points in Canada: J. H. Smith, F. C. Foster, J. Manale, Tom Lewis and others. J. Lewis was shipping his string from Latonia. Among the horses expected Wednesday from Columbus were those of O Reed and A. R. Smith. Eugem Bury opened the secretarys office Monday morning and was busy with his assistants accepting registrations, license applications and other papers incident to the opening. W. J. Martin wired that he would ship his smal string from Chicago Tuesday. Stables due in from Latonia include those of O. Viau, J. R. Allen, H. Veach, P. T. Chinn, J. P. Keezek, O. H. Brown, J. Hal-ford, W. Reed, C. R. Valentine and M. Thompson. H. Herendeen wired he would ship five horses from Rockingham Tuesday. Some of the horsemen making registrations Monday morning, already on the scene, include C. Albright, W. A. Adams, E. K. Bryson, Eugene Lutz, B. Bagley, J. Ches-ney, Nugent Brothers, H. N. Cooke, D. Christian, Benny Creech, B. Eskay, P. Gross, J. Hubbard, J. Howell, W. R. Hoffman, S. Sharp, A. S. Woodliffe, B. Lamport, M. F. Keller, E. J. McMahon and others. Thistle Down will open with an inaugural card of seven races Saturday, the Barbara Stanwyck, at three-quarters, being the initial handicap, carrying a value of 00. There are two races worth 00, one a sprint and the other a mile and a sixteenth affair, and four others at 00. There is a two-year-old condition race over the Thistle Down course, the others being for three-year-olds and over. This will be the first race meeting at the Thistle Down course run under the supervision of the Ohio Racing Commission, which will supervise the issuance of all licenses and will have a representative in the mutuel department. Charles Campau, who assists in the secretarys office, was an arrival from New Orleans. Badges were being distributed as rapidly as possible and a special drive is being made for clubhouse patronage. The clubhouse has been newly decorated and i being made especially attractive. All accommodations and catering facilities have been improved. Box seat reservations are being accepted in the Hollenden Hotel office of general manager Strong for opening day.
