LADY LAURA RUNS GOOD RACE Surprises by Accounting for Lark ¬ spur Purse Latonia Headliner Record WeekDay Crowd Watches Sport at atCovington Covington Course Ideal Weather WeatherConditions Conditions Prevail LATONIA Ky June 12 The Larkspur Purse at five furlongs for twoyearold fil ¬ lies topped a program made up almost com ¬ pletely of sprint races at Latonia this after ¬ noon Only one event on the card was de ¬ cided over a route the others being at either five or six furlongs furlongsThe The ideal weather brought out another large crowd exceeding even that of yester ¬ day which was believed to be one of the big ¬ gest offday crowds of the season Favor ¬ ites for the most part gave good accounts of themselves though several longshots scored monotonyThe to break the monotony I The Larkspur Purse was won by the Greenbrier Studs Lady Laura which encom ¬ passed the defeat of the more highly re ¬ garded First Note owned by Mrs J H Whitney and Joda from the Lloyd Brothers and Wedding Stable First Note and Joda finished respectivelyThe second and third respectively The only other starters were Gobet May Mack and Empress Wu and all three fin ¬ ished far in the wake of the successful trio trioLady Lady Laura ran a good race to get the decision She set her own pace under jockey R Finnerty and stood the hardest kind of a drive to stave off the bold challenge of First Note As it was the winners margin was only a nose Joda after forcing the winners pace finished two and a half lengths farther back backThe The victory was the second in a row for Lady Laura which sped over the fiveeighths of a mile in 101 Finnerty in scoring with Lady Laura recorded his second vic ¬ tory of the day he also having piloted Nightingale into first place in the second race raceThe The cofeature this afternoon was the WilH more Purse a dash of six furlongs for maiden threeyearolds and over and the winner turned up inthe fiveyearold Camp Cook owned by A Baker This gelding won in handy fashion beating Howard Our Sammy and seven others othersCamp Camp Cook was restrained off a fast pace set by Our Sammy and took the lead turn ¬ ing for home The task of setting the pace i for a half mile which he negotiated in 47 took much of the run out of Our Sammy and he was tiring badly near the finish How ¬ ard which had been trained for the Ken ¬ tucky Derby had no excuses He was off well but appeared to run sluggishly and had to be roused occasionally to keep up upThe The opening event at six furlongs of the afternoon went to Mose Goldblatts Panta Continued on t oentyninth page LADY LAURA RUNS GOOD RACE Continued from first page I loons with Cayuga second and Dewhurst third The Goldblatt filly ridden by D Taylor was restrained behind the leaders for a half mile came around her field at the head of the stretch and stood a hard drive to get the decision by three parts of a length lengthH H Loudens Nightingale was the best of a poor band in the second race which brought together eleven threeyearold maid ¬ ens In this Nightingale was many pounds the best for she came from last place to win by three lengths at the end of six fur ¬ longs Second to complete the journey was Annuity which also came from far back while Exponent was third thirdFair Fair Wanda showed the way most of a half mile and then tired Exponent forced the pace and also tired in the stretch though he held on long enough to get show money a head in front of Crude and a similar margin AnnuityThe behind Annuity The third race saw one of the longest priced winners of the meeting when R T Taylors Byphar flashed past the judges and rewarded his backers to the tune of 101 for 2 Under the energetic riding of J Meyer the gelding came from behind in the stretch to get the decision by threequar ¬ ters of a length lengthBroadcaster Broadcaster finished second while Rettef was third to complete the six furlongs Miss Curtice showed the way for the first half mile and then Rettef took momentary command Rettef in turn lost the lead to Broadcaster and then Byphar came along and passed all of them Broadcaster fought on doggedly to save second money while Rettef dropped back to third place Roulade began slowly and did not really start run ¬ ning until it was too late lateG G Simones Wild Gus which so narrowly missed graduating from the maiden two yearold ranks the other day captured the fourth race a sprint of five furlongs A fall marred the race In Chancery going down at the head of the strecth though fortu ¬ nately neither horse nor rider was seriously injured Wild Gus established a favorite alternated at setting the pace with Riff and when the latter dropped back Wild Gus still had enough left to withstand the challenge of Leo B which finished second Third money went to Imigert Wild Gus margin at the finish was a length though he prob ¬ ably could have won by a wider margin
