BARCELONA PETE NARROWLY Outlasts Manager Bill by a Head HeadAfter After Hard Fought Contest in inCharles Charles Towns Main Race CHARLES TOWN W Va June 12 The Natural Bridge a gallop of a mile and a sixteenth was the best offering at Charles Town today and it provided B F Stephen sons Barcelona Pete one that has always favored a muddy track with the opportu ¬ nity to take a head verdict from Manager Bill A length and a half back Little Stokes was third The winner was ridden by jockey S Palumbo and constituted a riding double for him he having also ridden Dixie Bee to victory in the fourth race raceBarcelona Barcelona Pete showed more early speed than usual and after a half mile had raced the early pacemaker Daisy Bunga into de ¬ feat Assuming a slight lead Barcelona Pete found Manager Bill racing lapped on him on the outside The pair raced as a team in this manner right to the finish and despite repeated attempts to overhaul the leader Manager Bill was not equal to the task Little Stokes had been slow to get going but gradually bettered his position on the inside In the stretch drive he closed very fast twoRain but was unable to reach the first two Rain which fell during the morning left the track in a muddy condition but a fair sized crowd was on hand for the days sport and the mutuel handle showed a decided increase over that of Monday
