WESTON TROPHY WINNER Veteran Gilbert Elston Pilots Braed albane Racer to Victory Gelded Juvenile Son of Nocturnal or orSun Sun Flag Carries 117 Pounds Poundsin in Latonia Triumph LATONIA Ky June 16 Weston a two yearold gelding by Nocturnal or Sun Flag from Madcap Princess owned by the Braedalbane Stable of Breckinridge and Shouse came through with a smashing ef ¬ fort under a powerful ride by the veteran Gilbert Elston while accounting for the thirtythird renewal of the Cincinnati Tro ¬ phy at Latonia Saturday afternoon afternoonCarrying Carrying 117 pounds and racing in the thick of contention throughout the winner reached the end of the six furlongs one and onehalf lengths in advance of Mrs J H Whitneys highly regarded No Saint which was among the top weights of the race The latter had a decisive margin over W E Smiths Sora which finished his engagement a half length in front of Prince Pine owned by Mrs William Crump CrumpTwelve Twelve started in the race which was won in the comparatively slow time of 115 By his victory Weston earned for his owners the tidy sum of 2680 while 500 was the second horses share Soras award was 250 and 125 went to the owner of Prince Pine PineNo No Saint which was backed into favorit ¬ ism started off as if he might make a run ¬ away of the race Getting to the front short ¬ ly after the start No Saint opened up a long lead on his rivals three lengths on the turn and four as they neared the stretch Wes ¬ ton meantime had been racing along in second place under clever rating ratingWhen When the field straightened out for the run home it appeared that No Saint would be a certain winner but after getting inside the final eighth he tired badly and it was no task for Weston to overhaul him Wes ¬ ton caught the leader in the last seventy yards and then drew away under strong pressure to win going away awaySora Sora raced among the prominent ones from the start relinquished his position for a brief period on the turn but mentIn In spite of the sultry weather a crowd of about 7500 was on hand to witness the sport which developed a number of close finishes with winning favorites in the majority majorityIn In the Olive Hill Purse at a mile and a sixteenth another of the attractions on Sat ¬ urdays program M J Conleys My Blaze made every post a winning one though the best horse probably was the heavily weighted and wellbacked Open Hearth which ran second secondOpen Open Hearth made to break from outside the starting stalls lost a lot of ground dur ¬ ing the race and finished fastest of all at the end He was beaten a length Third money in the field of five went to Howard HowardThe The Highland Stock Farm Handicap at six furlongs was the secondary attraction and in it Shepherd Boy after several un ¬ successful efforts at this meeting was the winner by a head in one of several close finishes of the afternoon afternoonThe The Laffoon Yeiser gelding ridden by Glenn Fowler was slow as usual hitting his stride but rounding the upper turn he got within striking distance of the leaders At the head of the stretch Fowler began subjecting his mount to the hardest kind of a drive and after getting in front just managed to last lastLeros Leros was second and Fredrick third Leros was even slower about making his move than Shepherd Boy for the simple reason that he was forced back at the start and then compelled to lose considerable ground while coming around his rivals in the stretch Fredrick was much used racing Ding Bin into defeat and after attaining a clear lead in the stretch gave a game per ¬ formance in finishing third thirdJesse Jesse Spencers Prince Doo after several unsuccessful attempts at this meeting grad ¬ uated from the maiden class in the opening event when he defeated a band of cheaper platers at six furlongs Under P Clelland Prince Doo went into an early lead main ¬ tained an advantage of a length for five eighths and drew out in the final furlong to win by five lengths Bob Custer raced in closest attendance to the pacemaker to the eighth post where he began to shorten his strides and finally was nipped for the place money by Blatola which came from far back The winner was an oddson favorite The first race was delayed some minutes because of a broken bit in the bridle of Fallen FallenHank Hank MacTavish owned by W F Axton and ridden by S Vail accounted for the sec ¬ ond race which brought out a band of maid ¬ en twoyearolds Hank MacTavish a favorite in the betting over Jawapa led over nearly all of the five furlongs but he had to be put to a severe drive to stand off the challenge of Jawapa which was beaten only a half length
