QUEBEC DERBY TO NIGGERTOE Gray Racer Shows Same Fine Speed He Displayed in Maryland Races Chrysmute Second MONTREAL Que June 16 Displaying the same kind of speed that characterized him in his Maryland efforts Niggertoc the swift running son of Peanuts and Nubia which performs for E C Gray scored his first victory since arriving in Canada when he accounted for the Quebec Derby a fea ¬ ture inaugurated in 1925 and raced for nine years over the now abandoned Dorval course Niggertoe added further to his fine rec ¬ ord when he sped to a front running vic ¬ tory with ease J U Grattons Chrysmute installed as favorite raced to second place three and onehalf lengths in advance of Mrs W H Denhams Cousin George J Cattarinichs Canadianbred Loggia was fourth fourthFrom From a good start Cousin George and Niggertoe went into the lead and raced head and head around the turn with Loggia third Chrysmute was last to leave but saved ground on the inside when they were straightened out in the back stretch Cousin George dropped back and Niggertoe drew clear Fellows rated the Peanuts colt in the lead but frequently shook him up After straightening out in the stretch Chrysmute who had moved up on the inside made a bold effort but Fellows released his hold and Niggertoe drew away into a three lengths margin as the wire was reached reachedChrysmute Chrysmute hung on gamely and was never endangered for second position Cousin George also was easily third thirdA A crowd of 12000 witnessed the days sport with the track in very bad shape from the recent heavy rains rainsThe The twentysecond renewal of the Pro ¬ vincial Nursery an annual event for juve ¬ niles bred in the Province of Quebec brought together a field of five all sired by Cudgel and went to J Cattarinichs Pestle with his stable companion Smoke Ring in sec ¬ ond place and Leo D owned by L Dandu rand in third place placeAt At the request of the trainers of the juve ¬ niles starting in the Nursery a special event on the Saturday card the contest was de ¬ cided over the five furlongs course instead of five and onehalf furlongs as originally sent out in the entries The track was in bad shape being very rough and heavy
