SINGING WOOD SCORES Upsets Calculations in Queens Coun ¬ ty Handicap at Aqueduct Withers Stakes Winner Defeats War WarGlory Glory and Burgoo King Dark DarkSecret Secret Second to Deduce NEW YORK N Y June 16 Mrs John Hay Whitneys Withers Stakes winner Singing Wood added the Queens County Handicap to his list of victories at Aque ¬ duct Saturday in a gamely run race The son of Royal Minstrel was giving away weight on the scale to each of the three starters that opposed him when he carried 114 pounds and in a gamely fought out bat ¬ tle took the measure of Samuel D Riddles War Glory E R Bradleys Burgoo King was a distant third beating C V Whitneys Roustabout the only other starter starterWith With perfect racing weather and a holi ¬ day program the crowd was tremendously large and there was need for additional seats erected for the occasion It was one of the most representative gatherings ever seen at old Aqueduct AqueductDark Dark Secret was withdrawn from the Queens County Handicap and reserved for the ract that followed and when Mr Khay ¬ yam and Kievex were also withdrawn only four were left and it was generally agreed that Burgoo King on his recent perform ¬ ances held the other three safe safeGeorge George Conway had added blinkers to War Glorys equipment and this probably had something to do with upsetting calcu ¬ lations lationsAs As the four left the stalls Gilbert at once went out with War Glory and the son of Man o War is a hard horse to catch when he can take the track Meade was right after him with Burgoo King and he had the Bradley horse on the inside He shook the horse up in an effort to catch War Glory before the turn was reached for his position was not exactly a desirable one with the danger of Gilbert coming over But Burgoo King was unable to catch the Riddle fouryearold and War Glory still showed the way when the turn was reached reachedJones Jones was rating Singing Wood along well back of the leading pair and Roustabout was three lengths back of the others Coucci had not asked him for anything and he was not making up any ground groundWar War Glory racing close to the rail as the Continued on thirtieth page SINGING WOOD SCORES Continued from first page stretch was reached was holding Burgoo King safe By this time Meade was at work on Burgoo King and it was evident he was beaten In the meantime Jones went to the outside of the pair with Singing Wood and as he shook up the son of Royal Minstrel he was steadily wearing down the other two Burgoo King tired badly in the final fur ¬ long but War Glory fought along coura ¬ geously as Singing Wood drew alongside but finally the threeyearold made him give way to cross the finish line winner by three quarters of a length lengthBurgoo Burgoo King had quit so badly he was beaten five lengths for second place but he was three lengths before Roustabout RoustaboutThe The South Shore Purse a condition race was chosen for the first showing of the Wheatley Stables Dark Secret under silks for the first time this year He was beaten when Mrs Henry Ughettas Deduce led him past the line by a couple of lengths but it was a faster run race than the Queens County Handicap and was ample to show that Dark Secret is still a good horse horseHe He needed this race to tighten him up thoroughly and he is sure to take his right ¬ ful place high in the handicap division Well back of Dark Secret William Woodwards Jovius just nosed out Chatmoss to be third thirdA A disqualification marred the running of the second race when Harry D Burchs Modern Ace was set back after he had just nosed out Mrs C A Hansons Gallic in a furious battle through the final furlong Modern Ace had bumped Gallic in that fighting finish to knock him off his stride and Rainey who rode Gallic made no claim of foul but he was sent for by the stewards who had plainly seen ttie fouling and after the boy had been questioned the order of the finish was changed awarding the purse to Gallic This moved George Boehles Marcasite into second place and third went to G C Winfreys Pending PendingJohn John Hay Whitney was on hand to root for Singing Wood in the Queens County Handicap Saturday SaturdayS S Renick was suspended for five days for foul riding in the first race and C Perna the same dose in the second race the stewards announced during the after ¬ noon Renick rode Palasa in the first race and Perna rode Modern Ace in the second
