CLASSIC TO DECIDE THREE-YEAR-OLD CHAMPIONSHIP i- — ■ — a a GREAT RACE ASSURED Cavalcade Has Formidable Rivals in Peace Chance and Discovery. ♦ High Quest Declared Out — Hadagal Looms Up as Dangerous — Risku- lus Returns to Form. % ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 9 — Americas champion three-year-old of 1934 should be revealed at Arlington Park next Saturday afternoon, July 14, with the running of the 5,000 added Classic at one mile and a quarter. The outstanding contestants are: Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes Cavalcade, winner of the Kentucky Derby, American Derby, Detroit Derby and Chesapeake Stakes and second, beaten a nose, to his stablemate, High Quest, in the Preakness Stakes. Joseph E. Wideners Peace Chance, winner of the Belmont Stakes in the fastest time in the history of the mile and a half race. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Discovery, victorious in the Brooklyn Handicap recently over the good older horse Dark Secret and second in the Kentucky Derby, American Derby and Chesapeake Stakes and third in the Preakness. A There will be other starters in the Classic, but the racing public, which has been great-H ly aroused over the relative merits of thes«H three brilliant horses, believes they willH dominate the running of the event. Caval- cade is acclaimed the smartest of the tr due to his wonderful record this year«B only defeat was suffered at the handB his stablemate, yet he was steadily ovesB ing High Quest at the finish df the PrelH ness, a shorter race than the Classic. H PEACE CHANCES GREAT SPEED. Peace Chance injected himself into the championship running by the clever manner in which he captured the Belmont and vanquished High Quest In setting a new time record for the race, the Widener colt ran the final quarter in :23% — a feat which has caused many racing experts to predict victory for him over Cavalcade in the Classic. Peace Chance finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby after he had set a new mile record at Churchill Downs, showing a splendid effort following a mishap at the start that almost threw the colt down. Interest in the Classic quickened over the week-end with the arrival from New York of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Discovery, which came in charge of trainer J. H. "Bud" Stotler. Discoverys recent clever victory in the Brooklyn Handicap, in which Dark Secret ran second, has so encouraged admirers of the Display colt that they believe he has a good chance to upset the Classic argument brewing between Cavalcade and Peace Chance Cavalcade, triple Derby winner and leading candidate for the three-year-old championship to be decided by the running of the Classic, will be the chief reliance of Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane in the mile and a quarter special. If the great son of Lance- gaye has assistance in the Classic, it will be furnished by Good Goods. LONG REST FOR HIGH QUEST. High Quest, which had been expected to accompany Cavalcade to the post in the Classic, will be given a long rest, it was decided today by trainer Robert A. Smith. The Preakness winner injured his quarter early in the season and the trouble has not cleared away to Smiths satisfaction, so the colt wiU take things easy for several months. Smiths decision was made following High Quests workout yesterday morning. In Goods Goods, Cavalcade will have a worthy running mate. The son of Neddie and Brocatelle was a recent winner here and followed up the victory with a good fourth in the Stars and Stripes Handicap. He is a half brother to Toro, which won the American Derby the year it was run at Arlington Park. That Chicago may have a worthy representative in Saturdays special was indicated by the splendid workout turned in by Hadagal, a member of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm Stable. The son of Sir Gallahad III. Continued on ninth page. CLASSIC TO DECIDE THREE-YEAR-OLD CHAMPIONSHIP Continued from first page. and Erne was asked for a mile trial by trainer B. B. Williams and he replied by go- I ing the distance in 1:40%, easily, pulling up an additional furlong in 1:54. Hadagal, which recently defeated Indian Runner and Evergold in the fastest six furlongs race of the meeting, was well rated throughout his workout, going the half mile in :49 and the I three-quarters in 1:14%. He is due for a I harder trial Wednesday. Another leading candidate for the Classic, i Norman Churchs Riskulus, also was asked for speed and Risques brother stepped over the mile and a furlong distance in 1:54, after having gone the half in :49, three-quarters in 1:14 and the mile in 1:41. Riskulus returned to winning form last week, and trainer E. L. FRzgerald believes the California-owned horse will have a royal chance if he holds the same condition as he did when he ran Gallant Sir to a head in the Agua Caliente Handicap. That the Classic is attracting nation-wide i interest is shown by the great number of reservations received by the Arlington man- ! agement. Several parties of New York en- ! thusiasts are coming, while fans in Cincinnati, Louisville, Detroit, Indianapolis and Milwaukee have requested reserved seats. Prominent sports writers in all parts of the country also have informed Arlington leaders of_their intention to be here Saturday. ♦
