PRE-DERBY ATMOSPHERE , i Presence of Favorite Chance Sun Enlivens Proceedings at Churchill. J. E. Wideners Colt . Reported in Fine Condition and Ready for Strenuous Training-. . LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 30. With Joseph E. Wideners Chance Sun, short-priced favorite for the Kentucky Derby, now on the scene, the Churchill Downs course is assuming its usual pre-derby atmosphere. The arrival of the public choice was all that was needed to start the foregathering of early morning railbirds, who will continue their daily pilgrimages until the 0,000 race is run on Saturday, May 4. This assembling of the railbirds, to watch the Derby horses work, is a part and parcel of Louisville. It reflects the interest of the Kentuckian in the horse itself. They gather on the back stretch of the old course just to enjoy the thrill that comes of seeing-a beautiful thoroughbred in action. It is in this setting that Chance Sun will receive his arduous preparation for the mile and a quarter struggle,, and it goes without saying that he will have a large contingent of intimate admirers when he faces the barrier. TRAINER COYNE PLEASED. Trainer Pete Coyne is more than pleased over the manner in which Chance Sun has wintered. He is now well conditioned for the beginning of real training, and unless he should meet with some mishap, Coyne will have him as fit for the Derby as was his candidate, Peace Chance, last year. A few days before the last Derby Peace Chance set a new track record at Churchill Downs with a mile in 1:35, and he went to the post in the Derby as keen as a horse can be. There still are many who believe Peace Chance would have won last years Derbg but for bad racing luck. He got off bH and suffered much from crowdineH first part of it, which probabljlHH any chance he had. Whether he could I.H beaten Cavacade that day is a question tol which there is as yet no answer. They did J not meet again, but Peace Chance demon j strated in his victory in the Belmont Stakes that he was a sensational racer. Chance Sun will endeavor to atone for the failure of Peace Chance, but Cavacade3 colors also will be carried. Cavalcades owner, Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes Brook -meade Stable, will be represented by an entry from Psychic Bid, Special Agent, Young Native and World Series. Of these Psychio Bid was the most brilliant performer last year. j PSYCHIC BEDS CREDENTIALS. Psychic Bid started twelve times, won four races, was second three times and third once. He won a total of 7,380. He triumphed over the best two-year-olds in tho country in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga He also won the Weybosset Handicap at Nar-ragansett, and the Sanford Stakes at Sara- toga. In the Hopeful he won by four lengths from such cracks as Rosemont, Es-posa, Omaha, Boxthorn, Try Sympathy, Bal-ladier, Plat Eye and others. Trainer Bob Smith, who conditioned Cavalcade for his Kentucky Derby victory last ; year, will have charge of the preparation of Psychic Bid and Mrs. Sloanes other entries. Weston, Jouett Shouses winner of the Cincinnati Trophy, is making a favorable impression in his early Derby work at Lexington. Although registered as a gelding and listed as such in the foal book, racing form charts and Kentucky Derby nominations, Weston is a colt. Officials at Churchill Downs stated that they had received from Mr. Shouse a copy of a letter from The Jockey Club, New York, stating that the correction had been made upon the official records.
