1 GENERAL NEWS OF THE DAY German police have arrested nuns and monks in raids on convents and monasteries, accusing them of smuggling funds out of Germany. According to a London dispatch an American has offered 00,000 for the famous Jonker diamond, fourth largest in the world, and it may soon be transferred from the obscurity of the vaults of the Diamond Corporation of London to the United States. There it may be cut into several smaller stones and eventually mounted in platinum and gold to form an arrangement of eardrops and a necklace. The Illinois State Recovery Act was held unconstitutional and the- national automobile code as applied to Illinois was declared inoperative Saturday in an opinion entered by Judge Homer W. Hall of the McLean County Court at Bloomington. The decision was rendered on a motion to quash information on which federal code authorities were attempting to prosecute Green-Wells, Inc., Bloomington Ford dealers. The soft coal industry and the United Mine Workers of America agreed Saturday to accept the NRAs proposal to continue present wage and hour contracts after April 1, thus averting a threatened walkout of nearly half a million miners. It was reported Saturday that direct negotiations with Italy over the colonial boundary disputes were suddenly broken off: by Ethiopia and a note sent to the League of Nations. A London cablegram says the Duke of Manchester was committed for trial Saturday at Old Bailey on charges of obtaining ,250 under false pretenses with intent to defraud. Specifically the charges were that the 58-year-old duke pawned two pieces of jewelry belonging to his late American-born mother, Consuelo, Duchess of Manchester. Evelyn John St. Loe Strachey, English writer and leader of the World Communist Movement, sailed from New York on the Berengaria Friday night shortly after the immigration authorities had dropped deportation proceedings against him.
