DERBY TRIAL TODAYS BIG EVENT AT CHURCHILL MILE RACE REAL TEST Grand Slam and The Fighter Most Prominent of Carded Starters. - Teufel and Granville Among Arrivals From East Indian Brooms Dazzling Speed. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 27 With all of the eastern candidates on the scene, or eri route, the eyes of Americas racing public will be fixed on Churchill Downs exclusively until after Saturdays sixty-second running of the Kentucky Derby. With no more racing with a bearing on the Derby in the East, tomorrows mile Derby Trial at Churchill Downs will mark the final pre-race appearance of any of the candidates. This race, a possible pitfall for some of the entries and nothing more than a final stiff conditioner for others, will conclude pre-Derby activities here. With the Trial decided, what other training is asked of Derby horses will be private. Several hopefuls are down to work Wednesday and on Friday all of the intended starters in Saturdays 0,000 contest will have final training in the form of short "blowouts," designed to give them their foot, or speed. Heading the latest additions to the invading contingent are Teufel, the Wheatley Stables winner of the Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica Saturday, and B-elair Studs Granville, which finished second to the Wheatley horse in that stake. Others already here, or arriving, to complete the lineup of eastern candidates are M. L. Schwartz Bold Venture, which reached the Downs yesterday; W. S. Kilmers Ned Reigh, and the gallant filly, Gold Seeker, owned by Fox-catcher Farms. FIELD OF MERIT. Bringing together the Bomar Stables Grand Slam and Forest Play, Milky Way Farms The Fighter and Sangreal, Calumet Farms Count Morse, Mrs. S. B. Masons He Did, Superior Stables Holl Image, Mrs. P. A. B. Wideners .Dnieper, and E. D. Shaffers Noble Star, tomorrows Derby Trial is expected to reveal almost a full measure of the power of these Djerby aspirants. The race will be run. over the mile course which has but one turn and while the distance is one quarter of a mile less than the much more testing route of the Derby the winner of the Trial is almost certain to become, if not already so regarded, one of the choices Saturday. Ten three-year-olds are in the race but J. S. Rileys Jimmie Caban-iss, a maiden, is not eligible for the Derby. As a result of stakes victories, Grand Slam, The Fighter and He Did will shoulder top weight of 118 pounds each tomorrow. Dnieper, also a stakes winner last year, gets in with three pounds less while Holl Image, Sangreal, Forest Play, Count Morse and Noble Star will have up 112 pounds each. Grand Slam, coupled with Forest Play, is regarded as the probable favorite, but many always in close touch with racing are willing to back the Milky Way combination of The Fighter and Sangreal, with still others looking for He Did and Count Morse to offer strong if not successful bids for the top part of the ,500 purse. R. E. Potts, trainer of Grand Slam and Forest Play, stated today that if the track is fast, both of his colts will be in the Derby field this with the provision that Forest Play displays what his trainer expects ot him tomorrow. If the track is muddy, only Grand Slam will represent the stable in the Derby. HE DID MUST IMPROVE. He Did, beaten by Brevity, J. E. Wideners Derby favorite, and several others in the seven furlongs Sophomores Purse on Saturday, must improve on his previous effort tomorrow to retain a place in the Derby field. J. T. Taylor, trainer of the Mason three-year-old, and C. Kurtsinger who rides him, are satisfied that he did not make much of an effort in the Sophomores. Kurtsinger said that the horse loafed badly almost throughout the engagement. This will mark The Fighters first public appearance since he won the Texas Derby at Arlington Downs for his fifth triumph in successive starts. He has been high up Continued on nineteenth page. Count Morse, which has not been under colors since last year, created quite a stir among horsemen and turf followers in the section when he worked a mile and a furlong here last Saturday morning in the splendid time of 1:53. It marked one of the outstanding trials among Derby horses and clearly stamped this son of Reigh Count, a Derby winner, as a performer of the first water. Indicating that he has lost none of the speed which carried him to a world record of 1:47 for a mile and a furlong, when he defeated Top Row, Azucar and others in the Marchbank Handicap at Tanforan two weeks ago, Indian Broom traveled three furlongs in the sizzling time of :341f. here this morning. In this short move, his first opportunity to give a sample of his speed since reaching the Downs from California, Indian Broom went the quarter in :22. The trial was a "blowout" for a longer drill tomorrow morning. Trainer Darrell Cannon had considered starting Indian Broom in the Trial, but finally decided to keep him out of the race rather than take a chance of injuring the son of Brooms. Also preparing for a longer work, and, like Indian Broom, his final serious one for Saturdays engagement, Bold Venture went a half mile this morning. Hard held, he covered the distance in :49. Max Hirsch, trainer of the Schwartz eligible, arrived this afternoon from New York and will be present to direct his Tuesday workout. Brevity and Coldstream, heroes of Saturdays Churchill Downs racing, which had a bearing on the Derby, were only galloped this morning. Similiar programs prevailed for E. R. Bradleys Bien Joli and Banister, and the several other candidates which have been on the grounds. The following are the starters in the Derby Trial: PP. Horse. Wt. Jockey. 1 iGrand Slam 118 J.
