DORA MAY BIG SURPRISE Defeats Another Outsider, Mary Terry, in Eastern Parkway Purse. Veteran Mack Garner Factor in Upset at Churchill Downs Miss Greenock First Surprise. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 27 Racing six furlongs in the Eastern Parkway Purse, a field of three-year-old fillies, including six nominees for the ,000 added Kentucky Oaks, to be renewed on the closing day of the meeting, furnished one of the principal contests as Derby week opened with exciting sport at Churchill Downs here today. Of eight to start in the Eastern Parkway, Rock-home Stables Dora May, winner of seven engagements last year, proved best and her victory, one of several surprises, came in one of the best finishes. Ridden by the veteran Mack Garner, the Rockhome Stable colorbearer defeated another outsider, C. R. Thompsons Mary Terry, by a head, while Dixianas Brendard, the hottest favorite of the afternoon, had to be content with minor honors. Of the others, Cottingham finished closest up, with Stepinanna, Miss Diavolo, Albania and Bleu next in order. Sent to the front in the first furlong, Dora May reached the turn a good length before Albania, which at this juncture had the favorite at her withers and in very close quarters on the inside. As she made her turn, Dora May was under restraint and aided by the breathing spell, soon stepped into a slightly greater lead after swinging into the final straightaway. Here a bumping match occurred between Albania and Brendard, and shortly after the former had fallen back in defeat, the fast closing Mary Terry, which George South brought down on the outside, kept the favorite well bottled up. Meanwhile, Dora May had shortened her stride, but not enough for Mary Terry to overtake her, and she raced past the finish a head before the Thompson filly. Performing over a fast track, the winner ran the distance in 1:13. It was her first public appearance as a three-year-old. DELD3ERAT0R FAILURE. There came another surprise for the large crowd when, in the Shawnee Park Handicap, the co-feature, the Everglades Stables Deliberator, also sent to the post at short odds, suffered defeat. Dusty Dawn, owned by Louise J. Hickman, of this city, and having the advantage of condition, the result of winter campaigning over the younger Deliberator, which had not been to the post since August, defeated him by a neck in the creditable time of 1:12. Slim Rosie finished third, leading Prince Fellow and Rock X. After following Slim Rosies pace to the stretch,, the winner moved to the front where he had to weather a hard drive to remain before the favorite, whose resolute, though futile bid, had Harry Louman hard at work astride the victor a major part of the final furlong. Spur Flower, Peck and Landsbergs winter campaigned daughter of Blue Larkspur, took an average sized field of three-year-old into camp in the first race at six furlongs. Ridden by C. Corbett, the Chicago-owned filly raced around Geo. Gable and Fairisk to be in front in the stretch, then came on to score by three lengths as Tidewater, which Continued on twenty-second page. DORA MAY BIG SURPRISE Continued from first page. had advanced to second place in the stretch, outlasted Geo. Gable for second honors. Min Ormont was fourth in the field of nine. Fairisk, the choice, and Down in Front tired badly after displaying the most early speed. Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way Farms silks, which cut such a wide swath in the racing at Arlington Downs and Santa Anita, were carried to their first score of the meeting when Reaping Reward led a large field of maiden juvenile colts and geldings from the start to the finish in the second race at four and one-half furlongs. Scoring the second Chicago triumph of the afternoon, Reaping Reward sprinted into a good lead within a furlong after the start, and after increasing his advantage when entering the j stretch, came on to defeat Prairie Dog by about two lengths and a half. The latter, which was having his first test in actual competition, wrested second from Rome Haul, another first outer, in the final strides and only a neck separated them at the end. Biologist led the others, of which there were eight. The winner, a son of Sickle, had started three times previously. He was made the favorite. Parkview Stables Miss Greenock, a winner of two races last year, opened her three-year-old campaign with a victory when she defeated Over Yonder, Flavor, Teddy Has-lam and five others of her age in the third race, also over six furlongs. A 24 to 1 chance in the betting, the successful Cincinnati-owned filly raced to the front shortly after the start and never was closely pressed. At the finish she was a good length before Over Yonder, with Flavor a head farther back. The latter shared favoritism with Sky Pilot, which failed to perform up to expectations. A. Pelleteri who prepared Spur Flower, winner of the first race, sent another winner to the post, this one under his own colors, when Reckless took the fourth race, for two-year-olds fillies for her second win in successive starts, the previous one at Arlington Downs. After the first quarter in which he displaced Chanciest in front, the Pelleteri filly held a big lead over her opponent and won by three lengths with Wowo second and Alice G. third. Miss Gravity, which ruled a strong second choice to the winner, was outpaced though she did gain some ground in the stretch.
