GRAND SLAM, BRUSH HOOK j AND CARV0LA IN DERBY ! j j AURORA, 111.. May 16.— Receipt of three additional candidates for the 2,000 added Illinois Derby, scheduled for Friday at the Fox Valley Jockey Clubs track, increased the total number of nominations to thrrty-six at closing time. The Bomar Stables Grand Slam, regarded as one of the top notchers of the three-year-old crop, is the most important of the trio of eligibles that beat the deadline for making entries. In addition to Grand Slam, G. R. Bryson entered E. K. Brysons filly, Carvola, and the nomination of the Greentree Stables Brush Hook was the third received. Brush Hook has not been to the post this year, starting only twice as a two-year-old, and is a maiden performer. • It is quite certain that the most representative field of three-year-olds in the history of the stake will be available for the fourth renewal of the Illinois Derby, with a closely contested race in prospect. Considerable interest is manifested in the Derby and the result is expected to have some bearing on the Chicago Derby, which is scheduled for the forthcoming Hawthorne meeting. Though it is yet too early to predict the number of starters in the race, racing secretary Leigh is of the opinion that the largest number of starters since the inauguration of the race will face the barrier. Several of the candidates, not yet on the grounds, aie expected early next week for the final prep over the Aurora course.
