GOOD GOODS TRIUMPHS! — -— i Carries Brookmeade Stable Colors! to Success in Governors Handicap. J ♦ Runs Mile and Eighth in 1:49% to Beat Dark Hope and Allen Z. Before Capacity Crowe . ■ PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 16.— The white and royal blue of Brookmeade, made famous by the feats of Cavalcade, flashed to vie- , | tory in the Governors Handicap at Narra-gansett today as Good Goods came home j a length and a half in advance of J. W. Y. | I Martins Dixie Handicap winner, Dark Hope. Another length and a half back, the early pacemaker, Allen Z., was third. The race i ■ was run before another throng that packed even those spacious grounds to overflowing. After the race, Governor Green, of Rhode Island, presented a handsome trophy 1 Id Howard Holmes, who accepted it on i behalf of Mrs. Dodge Sloane, Brookmeade Owner. The mile and a furlong event car-riad : 1 ,000 added, of which ,370 went to the winner. Good Goods finished out in l:4t%, which j was only a fifth off the track record. It was i ! an excellent performance and the winner was given an intelligent ride by Mike Corona. Gallant Prince broke fastest, although the leaders were closely bunched as they passed the stand for the first time around. At the clubhouse turn Allen Z. went into the lead, and he kept the scarlet silks of W. G. Clys-• dale in front all down the back stretch and around the stretch turn, though he never i was much more than a head in front of j I Dark Hope. Good Goods was in sixth place and under restraint during the back stretch 1 run. Gallant Prince was third at this stage of the journey, but he was laboring and it , did not appear as though he would prove a serious factor when the real racing began. i ! Corona moved with the winner as they approached the stretch. Here Allen Z. began to tire and Dark Hope took a brief lead. PROVES BEST OF FIELD. Good Goods charged gamely in the stretch and had little trouble passing Dark Hope. 1 He was ridden out, but seemed much the best in the race. Allen Z. was a tired horse at the finish, but he held on gamely and staved off Roustabout for third honors by two lengths. Gallant Prince, after his early spurt, wound up fifth in the field of seven i that accepted. Araho Stables Howard never was in the hunt, nor was Rip Van Winkle, | which brought up the rear. Miss A. Doris Lady Higloss turned six furlongs in 1:10% to win the Nooseneck | i Handicap by two lengths over Candy Prince, i H. T. Archibalds half of the Archibald- , Spatola entry. Wise Prince, stablemate of-f the second horse, was a neck back in third place. The defeat of the entry was a hard I blow for the favorite players who had made the pair an overwhelming choice. The winner showed .6.60 in the "tote." F. Coppas Epibeau, a half-brother to Sun 1 | Beau, worlds largest money winner, sprinted i home in the six furlongs introductory race, I I leading the well backed Grannys Trade by three lengths. A photograph was required for the third placing, with Scatter Brain, a Mose Lowenstein campaigner, being given the award by a head over C. V. Whitneys Capuche. The field began as a team after Sir Rollie 1 and Grannys Trade had delayed the start. Grannys Trade, under the banner of G. L. Weiss, got off fast despite her post antics. She and Epibeau battled head and head down the back stretch, with Grannys Trade going to the front. As they turned for home Le Blanc drove the winner to the front again and he was drawing away in the stretch. He completed the distance in the , fast time of 1:11*5. MISS MARLBORO SCORES. Miss Marlboro, racing for Connie Smythe, took the juvenile event that was second on the card. She was ridden out by Mack Winters to score by a length and a half over Percent, carrying the Eton blue and brown of C. V. Whitney. Bain Marie was third in the field of eight that started, with Trina a close fourth. Jack o Spades dealt the public | a heavy blow when he finished out of the ! money. He began very fast and was in front as they turned for home. However, the eventual leaders gained on him fast and he tired. The winner ran the distance in :53?s I and paid 1.30. After a thrilling duel from the middle of the back stretch until they flashed past the judges pagoda, Sweeperman, from the stable , of Mrs. A. Schwartz, drove home in front of the gray Guardian, carrying the colors of | Mrs. L. E. Ames, wife of Narragansetts demon publicity agent. The margin of victory was a neck. The gray and the bay came down the stretch head and head in one of the prettiest battles that has been staged here this season. They finished three lengths in front of Tight Wad in third place, a length in front of Yap. The latter was ridden by Wimmer and that boy was set down for five days for interfering with Guardian. Bay Bubble, under the bright blue jacket of W. C. Stioube, made good for the public in the fourth after giving the crowd several moments of heart failure. At the end the Bubbling Over filly was only a neck clear of H. T. Archibalds Black Mistress, with Ste. Louise two and a half lengths back in third place. It marked the first score of the meeting for trainer A. G. Tarn. Cohort Miss furnished an upset by leading ! the nine platers that opposed her in the ; one mile and a sixteenth of the seventh event. The consistent Stone Martin drove into second place and Crowned Head was third. | .
