WRIGHT FILLY IN FRONT Chic Maud Takes Lafayette Stakes for Chicago Sportsman. Defeats Green Bottle by a Length Dickerville Left at Post in Keeneland Feature. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 27. The Calumet Farm stable of Warren Wright. Chicago sportsman, made the Lafayette Stakes its second important triumph of the Keeneland meeting with the diminutive, but speedy, Chic Maud this afternoon. A fair-sized crowd braved the cold and threatening weather to see the bay daughter of Chicle Maud Muller defeat nine other good youngsters in the ,500 added event over the Headley Course, with ,225 as the winners share. The track was sloppy; and Chic Maud required :47 to gain her victory by a length over Millsdale Stables Green Bottle as James W. Parrishs Knee Deep was another four lengths back, in third place. Disappointing to many in the crowd wa3 the failure of Dickerville to break with the field. The Shandon Farm colt, which had established the record for the Headley Course distance, which is forty feet short of four furlongs, in winning the first event of the meeting, was fractious at the post, and just as William Hamilton effected the start the colt began backing up. No attempt was made to send him after the field, which was well on its way. VICTORIOUS LAST SATURDAY. On last Saturday the Calumet silks were carried to victory in the Ben Ali Handicap by Count Morse over the Kentucky Derby candidates Dellor and White Tie. Irving Anderson was up on Chic Maud as he was on Count Morse. Continued on twenty-second page. WRIGHT FILLY IN FRONT Continued from first page. Well supported in the wagering. Chic Maud stood very quietly at the post until the bell rang, when she was off like a flash to engage Green Bottle for the lead, these two darting aw.ay from the others. As Green Bottle pursued a wide turn into the stretch, Chic Maud took undisputed possession of the lead and she held the Millsdale colt at her heels all through the final straightaway. Knee Deep seemed hopelessly out of the running in the opening quarter, but he came through with a sensational effort through the stretch to race into third place a head before Stormy Sea, while Congressman was fifth. The latter two were closer up for the stretch run, particularly Congressman, which made a big saving of ground at the stretch turn to move into third place, but both weakened in the final drive. Patrona was a factor for a quarter, but then shortened her stride as though she did not care for the sloppy going. RECEIVES TROPHY. Owner Wright was awarded a handsome trophy by Leonard B. Shouse, president of the Lafayette Hotel, in honor of Chic Mauds victory. She was making her first appearance since her campaign at Hialeah, where 1 she accounted for the first of her two 1 starts, finishing fourth in the Nursery Stakes Number One. Jockey George Woolf accepted his first mount of the meeting on Diavolo Boy in the opening race and he drove the bay son of Diavolo and Bonny Barry to a hard-earned victory over Big Boy Blue. Three-quarters of a length separated the two colts, while Commission was four lengths back in third place. Diavolo Boy required a sixteenth of a mile to settle into his stride, but thereafter Woolf had him moving up fast to engage Big Boy Blue for the lead approaching the furlong I pole. After a brush of more than a sixteenth of a mile, the Valdina colt was able to draw away from Big Boy Blue. Commission was a contender throughout, while Ebony Boy showed late speed. The second race, engaging a half dozen of the cheaper sort of platers over six furlongs, resulted in a parade, with Patsy-ette, owned by B. W. Stivers, local owner and an odds-on favorite, making every post a winning one. Under the direction of Robert Dotter the seven-year-old daughter of Flight of Time and Electro scampered through the slop to defeat Ada W. by two and one-half lengths, the latter finishing four lengths before Cubanette, with Riff fourth. DUNN HORSE WINS. The silks of Neville Dunn were borne to victory by Top Bracket in the third race. She took the measure of a half dozen of the cheapest sprinters on the grounds. Showing a good flight of speed, Top Bracket took command soon after the start and held sway to the end, where she was three-quarters of a length before Job Printer, while Gay Troubadour was another two I lengths back in third place. Royal Charm, the odds-on favorite, was fourth after being a factor during the opening quarter. Grey Streak scored his second victory of the meeting for the Millsdale Stable in easy fashion by accounting for the fourth race, the Shadybrook Farm Purse. Installed the favorite, although carrying top weight of 119 pounds, the five-year-old gray gelding, by Pompey Jezebel, ran the six furlongs in 1:13 to defeat Surveyor by four lengths as Boston Pal was another two lengths back. Blue Gauntlet was fourth among the half dozen middle-grade sprinters composing the field.
